Clan tartans are patterns consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. These patterns were originally used by Scottish and Irish highland clans to uniquely identify themselves and their allies on the battlefield. Today, clan tartans remain an integral part of Scottish heritage and culture.
Each clan has an officially registered tartan pattern that is uniquely associated with them. However, over the years there have been many additional tartan patterns produced that are not necessarily officially associated with any one clan. Tartan patterns range widely in their colour combinations but most use at least two or three colours that blend together harmoniously. Common colours include shades of red, green, blue, black and yellow.
