WHAT MAKES BRISTOL, BRISTOL? Takes 1min to fill out. And stick in an image that sums up the city to you. CAN YOU GUESS MY 3 WORDS FOR BRISTOL? https://lnkd.in/epG8Qs_J "Making Temple Quarter a great place to be Distinct places with genuine character stand out from the crowd. They become places people love, spend time in and want to share with others. This is our ambition for Temple Quarter. When we asked earlier this year, 87% of respondents agreed with our guiding principles for change. But lots of people also said that these principles needed to “be more Bristol” to better reflect our city’s past, present, and future. We want to know what you think makes Bristol, Bristol, and how those things can help to shape the future of Temple Quarter. Complete this short survey by 5 January to help inform a placemaking strategy and masterplan for Temple Quarter." The incredible, historic Denny Mansion in the Windermere neighborhood of Seattle is set to be demolished. This building is still in great condition and could be restored with other housing developed around it thoughtfully; however, developing new housing and refurbishing an old structure is not cost beneficial for developers whose primary focus is on their bottom line. It is sad stories like this that motivate our company to continue the work we do to restore older homes and buildings, while thoughtfully developing around them. We can expand housing without destroying architectural history; it just takes more time and money, which is typically the case when you try to make thoughtful forward progress. https://lnkd.in/dCz4t4ds

Hard work, Productivity, and Self-Reliance... The same values that built and sustained this great structure for the first 100 years will be the same that will allow it to endure the next 100 years. These are the values of the proposed state of Deseret, which would eventually become the State of Utah. These are also values that, not-so-coincidentally, are fundamental to our work and mission at Intermark Steel. As such, we are thrilled to participate in the preservation of one of the State’s most historical buildings, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (formerly called the Hotel Utah). As we prepare to assist Okland Construction with the building maintenance, including seismic upgrades, new stairs, and new finishes, we have taken some time to look into the history of this great building: The name Deseret means honeybee, a symbol often represented in the early architecture of Salt Lake City; a city that stands as a testament of our forefathers' cooperative and dedicated efforts. Today, it is the thriving economic and political center of the Intermountain west, but it was built up from a remote, unwanted, unproductive expanse of land adjacent to the Great Salt Lake. In 1909, a group of business and ecclesiastical leaders proposed to build a 10-story grand hotel at the heart of the city. The Hotel Utah was recognized as the finest hotel from Chicago to Los Angeles and hosted famous entertainers, industrialists, and even U.S. Presidents. The hotel was a symbol of industry and modernization during a time of Western expansion. In 1993, after the hotel was no longer considered a viable business, it was remodeled and repurposed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was renamed the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and has served the public with several restaurants, reception, banquet, and offices. We are so grateful for the opportunity to preserve this building and its history! Interim for Projects, Placemaking and Regeneration with extensive experience of project funding, development and delivery and organisational change in the public sector.
Interesting read
Martyn Evans has written a wonderful article for BD on the Crooked House pub. He brilliantly captures many of the issues that this story touches on - not least the intangible value that old and storied buildings bring to communities across the UK. "We like to tell stories of the history of the buildings and places we re-make but how often do we get them wrong because we don’t spend the time to dig deep enough? And what does that do for our connections to the people who live and work around our projects and the long-term viability of the schemes we build? "Those of us building on former industrial sites, telling romantic stories of the Industrial Revolution, particularly in the North, and invoking the innovation of the past to inspire the success of the new have to be very careful that we get those stories right. Even 300 years on, there are people living in our towns and cities whose lives are disadvantaged and prejudiced by how our communities developed over time. "Whilst it’s not our job to apologise or atone for the sins of the past, it is definitely our responsibility to recognise the impact of that heritage and shape our places accordingly, delivering ever-greater equality of access to the community services our developments provide. We have agency in this, we can do it better." #heritage #architecture #crookedhouse #staffordshire #culture #regeneration #place #community https://lnkd.in/e6_qPbjX
The loss of the Crooked House pub reveals that built heritage is about a lot more than buildings

Did you know while Central Park looks natural, it is almost entirely landscaped and contains several artificial lakes.? Central Park, despite its appearance as a green sanctuary in the heart of a bustling metropolis, is entirely man-made. While it may seem like a natural landscape, the park's flora, landforms, water bodies, and all its other features were intentionally designed and constructed. This urban oasis, although seamlessly integrated into the city, didn't exist in its current form until humans meticulously planned and shaped it. Want to learn more about the New York market? Our community is growing. From expanding neighborhoods to city development projects, Madison is experiencing rapid growth. It’s so much growth that it can be hard to keep track of it all. That’s why it's so great to have this helpful tracker from Downtown Madison. This website lists all of the current downtown projects and shows you where each project is at in its development. From projects currently in the planning stage to projects that are in active construction, this site keeps you up to date with all the ways our city is growing downtown. Visit the tracker here: https://lnkd.in/edVRyy-U And to learn more about our city’s growth, we recommend this great article from Madison Channel 3000. The article is from a few months ago and goes hand in hand with the downtown tracker. The article walks through the new projects and development plans that are changing our city. For example, Channel 3000 says, “there are so many projects currently underway that demonstrate investment in the entire community — cultural centers like the Black Business Hub, Centro Hispano and The Center for Black Excellence and Culture.” They also discuss the many historic projects underway and the recent Lake Monona Waterfront Design Challenge which presented “plans to massively improve the 1.7-mile lakeshore stretch between Olin Park and Law Park along John Nolen Drive.” To learn more about the ways our community is growing, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eGJjZJKa #madisonwi #realestate #alvaradorealestategroup #realestatemarket #community #homebuying #madisonrealestate #madisonrealestatemarket #madisonhomes #madisoncommunity
