New York has the best opportunities for architects in the US. Not our words, yours. 44% of you voted it the number one state in the country. It's true, with its high project volume, concentration of top practices, and fast-paced environment, New York is on another level. That said, we’re seeing a surge in roles across our California and Texas offices, particularly in Austin and San Francisco. The US as a whole is proving to be a strong market for architects. Our audience recently ranked it the best country in the world for architecture opportunities, with 41% of the vote, nearly double the next highest, the UK at 24%. Does that mean New York is the best city in the world to be an architect? Would you agree, or is another state (or country) climbing the ranks?

Working with this brilliant group at the Design and Construction Excellence Exchange changes so many things for me. During this presentation, we discussed decades old "industry standards" that everyone in the room agrees DO NOT work. Why are we not taking advantage of our project connections to improve the design documents? One of the general contractor attendees, working on CMAR, said that his company performs detail charettes with the entire design and construction team DURING the development of the construction documents so that the details are drawn correctly the first time with reviews in real time by all parties, including trade partners. This strategy seems like some type of light bulb moment - everyone on the team is under contract, everyone on the team is working toward a common goal - yet we follow the same old processes. Why does it make any sense to "finish" documents and THEN review them so they just have to be re-done?? Or so the construction team can suggest VE or alternates after the documents are done so that the drawings have to be changed again? The industry can change, and needs to, but we need to all collectively nurture more pragmatic processes and encourage better collaboration and communication
