Keeping your vessels' FFE🔹LSA🔹Lifeboat🔹 compliant with SOLAS ⎮ Managing Director at Inglasco International Ltd.
No more PFOS in ship firefighting foam after January 1, 2026! Reminder for technical superintendents that IMO banned perfluoro-octane sulfonic acid (PFOS) from fire-fighting systems aboard ships. Here's what you need to know: 🔹What is PFOS? ✔️A perfluorinated alkylated substance (PFAS) commonly used in industrial processes and consumer products. ✔️Known for its extreme persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity, causing harm to Arctic wildlife and posing health risks to humans. 🔹Why the ban? ✔️To shield crew members from exposure to hazardous substances used in fire-fighting systems. ✔️To minimize environmental impact, acknowledging PFOS's bioaccumulative and toxic nature. 🔹Regulatory decisions: ✔️Decision made during the IMO SSE 8 session, finalizing the ban on PFOS from new ships starting January 1, 2026. ✔️Existing ships must phase out PFOS within five years from the ban's effective date. ✔️Substances containing PFOS, when removed from ships, must be delivered to appropriate reception facilities. 🔹International Convention Amendments: ✔️Amendments made to SOLAS convention and High-Speed Craft (HSC) codes, including the 1994 and 2000 HSC Codes. ✔️The ban covers both new and existing ships, emphasizing the global commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection. Suggestion: Plan for the transition before your next drydock, as it involves cleaning, proper disposal, and potential system modifications. ~~~~~ I'm Chris, with 18+ years of experience in ship safety services. I can help you resolve issues with 🧯FFE/LSA, lifeboats, calibrations, or bridge electronics without any hassle. Drop me a DM to discuss. #maritime #shipsandshipping #lsa #ffe #lifeboats

A high-level international group looked at the challenges of Managing Impact and Vibration in the Maritime Workplace. With focus on Repeated Shock and Whole Body Vibration, presenters and discussions showed how much has changed and improved over the past decade. Some sectors now need to catch up quickly! NEXT GEN Workshop Lead, John Haynes, opened the session with a presentation highlighting ‘Effective RS & WBV Training for the Team.’ This has proved to be very successful for all involved, from Onshore Managers to Crews and Passengers. This latest edition of the NEXT GEN Shock Mitigation Workshop was run via Teams on 19 March. The programme proved to be highly relevant as shown by the excellent Feedback - See https://shorturl.at/mnFZ4 John McCorquodale, Inspector at Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) examined ‘Lessons Learned from Recent Accidents and Incidents on RIBs and Fast Craft.’ Tom Coe, Senior Engineer at Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) presented on ‘Mitigating the Risk to Crews - From Inflatable Rescue Craft to All Weather Lifeboats.’ Julian Morgan, MD of KPM Marine / Scot Seat took a deep dive into ‘Designing Helm, Crew and Passenger Seating.’ Besides the risks of Whole Body Vibration, he showed how vital Crash Protection can be at sea. James Glover, MD of Maritime Systems showed ‘The Benefits of Real Time Versus Historic Vibration Data for Decision Making.’ Accelerometers can be linked to a traffic light system showing green - amber - red. Joseph Salmon, MD of Salmon Power Sports demonstrated the value of ‘Ballast Systems to Improve Ride Quality and Reduce Slamming on Planing Vessels.’ Balancing heavy engines at the stern with movable water ballast at the bow. Dr Tom Gunston, Gunston Consulting / British and ISO Standards gave a thorough overview of ‘How Marine Suspension Seating Requirements and Specifications are Evolving.’ Rob Taylor, Code Vessel Lead at Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) looked at the challenges of developing rules and regulations for vessels. This included background to MGN 436 which provides ‘Guidance on Mitigating Against the Effects of Shocks and Impacts on Small Vessels.’ #NEXTGEN #ShockMitigation #WholeBodyVibration #RepeatedShock #RSandWBV #Boat #RIB #RHIB

Management of Survival Craft on Fixed/Floating Offshore Installations: Preliminary Findings on Best Practice December 2023 The testing and maintenance of survival craft presents much greater risks at offshore facilities, which operate in a fixed position exposed to open ocean environments, than onboard ships, which can relocate to a safer location. This information paper aims to drive improvements to current Life Saving Appliance design and safeguards, regulatory requirements, industry best practices and programmes. It makes a case for change to the IMO, government marine regulatory authorities, industry partners and LSA Original Equipment Manufacturers to drive towards an agreed international standard that is fit for purpose for the design, maintenance, training, testing and operation of offshore facility survival craft. This preliminary information paper is intended as a contribution to further work, culminating in a more detailed publication in parallel with a case for change submission to the IMO #offshoreoilandgas #offshoredrilling #imo #solas #lifeboat #offshoreindustry #oilandgascompanies #fpso #fso #ocimf #imca #marineindustry
