🚀 Exciting developments in innovation ecosystems! 🚀 On May 14, local and regional leaders gathered at the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) to discuss the crucial role of knowledge in strengthening innovation ecosystems. This seminar, a collaboration between the CoR SEDEC Commission and the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, provided a vibrant platform for exchanging best practices and translating knowledge into practical solutions. Under the "Knowledge valorisation for the regional and local R&I ecosystems" theme, experts and policymakers shared their experiences and innovative solutions to enhance the socio-economic impact of research and innovation. The discussions underscored the importance of using research knowledge to develop sustainable products, services, and policies that address current societal needs and improve citizens' lives. A highlight of the seminar was the Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) on Knowledge Valorisation, an initiative launched in 2023 to help Member States and associated countries enhance their policies and public support for knowledge adoption and dissemination. This initiative focuses on skills, intersectoral cooperation, and incentive systems, aligning with the New European Innovation Agenda. Tanya Hristova (BG/EPP), chair of the SEDEC Commission and mayor of Gabrovo, emphasized the significance of 'knowledge valorisation': "This is a two-way process, where research results are shared at the regional level, while local stakeholders can bring their needs and aspirations to innovators and scholars." Let's continue driving new solutions and best practices in research and innovation through knowledge valorisation and dialogue! Doing interdisciplinary research well is challenging but has great potential for innovation and insight, hence this call. I would like to highlight a couple of projects from the list that focus on areas I have had many conversations about with fellow researchers and that may therefore be of interest to colleagues, e.g. Jessica Ozan; Gayle Munro; Kully Kaur-Ballagan; Martin Wood; and others, I am sure. GRASPING DATA: co-creating physicalisations to empower young children to interact with, understand, and benefit from their personal data Led by Andrew Manches, The University of Edinburgh Professor Andrew Manches from The University of Edinburgh will lead a project to change perceptions about children and their personal data through the creation of cutting-edge, child-centred tools and teaching practices. The project will work with 270 children aged three to eight in schools, Edinburgh Zoo and Glasgow Science Centre to construct physical representations of personal data that children can touch, explore, talk about and learn with. It will contribute knowledge to early learning, cognitive psychology, child-centred design, data ethics, data visualisation and computer science. The greatest impact of this project will be on children, who will be able to engage, enjoy and understand their data-saturated world better. It will give them greater confidence that they should and can play a role in the design of their future. ANIMATING MINDS: triangulating the age-appropriate impact of children’s media Led by Tim Smith, University of the Arts London Professor Tim Smith from the University of the Arts London will lead a team across four research organisations to build an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can predict a video clip’s potential impact on children’s ability to learn, understand and develop self-control. The AI tool will be used by media creatives to check whether content is developmentally appropriate for their target audience, aiding in the creation of higher-quality content and allowing parents to make more informed decisions on content selection. This project will specifically focus on the impact of children’s media on children aged three to six, a key stage in neurocognition development. It will bring together a unique team of researchers from: children’s animation practice media theory developmental psychology neuroscience AI CHAILD: Children’s Agency In the age of AI: Leveraging InterDisciplinarity Led by Nigel Shadbolt, University of Oxford

Researchers with a passion for action, consider submitting your work to the New Business Models conference 2024 by 15 February (extended deadline!). Sveinung Jørgensen, Ankita Das, Deanna Han, Laura Niessen & me will be organising the following conference track: 2.2 BUSINESS MODEL EXPERIMENTATION FOR CIRCULAR ECONOMY: CLOSE, SLOW, NARROW, REGENERATE The circular economy is an inspiration to many companies. Yet, established businesses and new ventures alike need significant experimentation to create desirable, feasible, viable, and sustainable business models. While companies have been quite successful at creating business models focused on resource efficiencies and ’narrowing the loop’ and closing the loop through recycling, the more challenging business models focused on regeneration, as well as slowing the loop through strategies such as sufficiency are less commonplace. This track focuses on the cases, practices and tools of experimentation with new circular business model strategies. Of particular interest are cases that focus on sufficiency or regeneration and examples that moved from experiments to scaling up impact. #sufficiency #netpositive #regeneration #businessexperimentation Circular X https://lnkd.in/ebhZPGv3

It’s a tough gig, opening the last day of a conference after an awards dinner the night before! But Prof Tim Vorley OBE, Christine Doel and Andrew Carter, ably chaired by John Leake - Sci-Tech Daresbury more than rose to the challenge with a great discussion on innovation clusters. My favourite points were; “Thinking about sectors independently is less helpful than looking at how they relate” and “think of clusters as verbs not nouns”. This led on nicely to a panel I joined (representing #UKInnovationDistrictsGroup) alongside Phil Carvil, Joshua Hawkins, Placi Espejo, Angela Kukula, Philip Macdonald chaired by Jo Stevens, who all know a thing or two about innovation clusters and hotspots! I was taken by how the UK space cluster might offer some valuable insights and potentially a blueprint for what a ‘Team GB approach’ to cluster development can look like in order to operate on a world-wide scale (and beyond!). My main reflections on innovation clusters were: 1. Size isn’t everything 2. Don’t forget the human scale 3. Hotspots in clusters are key 4. What we measure counts 5. How do you measure partnership strength? If you’re measuring partnership strength with respect to an innovation hub or cluster, I’d love to hear from you to learn more about how. Drop me line. Congratulations to James Chaffer and the whole of the UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association team for a fabulous 40th birthday conference. Thanks for having me to speak. #ukinnovationdistricts #innovation #innovationclusters #industrialstrategy

Two days of a full program in Dresden: The #ICDLI Technical Commission now met in the eastern German city in the Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden gemeinnützige GmbH (IHD) to exchange current information and innovations in the HPL world. In addition to specific projects - such as the work on a European HPL label on quality and sustainability - the conference focused primarily on the topics of sustainability and #HPL, new technical developments, chemical regulation and a restart of the #HPLAcademy (the training programme of the HPL manufacturers). One aspect that is set to play a greater role in the association's work in the future is addressing political stakeholders to a greater extent. Of course, personal exchange during breaks and at dinner was also a must. The next meeting of the ICDLI Technical Commission will take place in Frankfurt am Main/Germany at the end of November. Furthermore, it was nice to see that a few new faces and member companies enriched the meeting. Event announcement: Another important agenda point in Dresden was the upcoming annual ICDLI European HPL Summit, taking place in October - this time in the Portuguese city of Porto. Participants can expect a varied program on the topics of market development, design trends, and sustainability. Many thanks to Lars Blüthgen for being a wonderful host! #ICDLI #HPL #CircularEconomy #environment #sustainability #technology #networking
