🌍🌱 This #WorldEnvironmentDay, we focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” As a global women's advocacy movement for gender equality and environmental conservation, HER Planet Earth aims to empower women to become policymakers and agents of change, achieving social and economic equity and a thriving planet. Here are seven impactful ways to get involved in ecosystem restoration: 1. Make agriculture sustainable 🌾 Reduces soil degradation and boosts food security. 2. Save the soil 🌿 Prevents erosion and maintains nutrient levels. 3. Protect the pollinators 🐝 Essential for crop production and biodiversity. 4. Restore freshwater ecosystems 💧 Ensures clean water and supports aquatic life. 5. Renew coastal and marine areas 🌊 Protects shorelines and marine biodiversity. 6. Bring nature back to cities 🌳 Enhances urban living and reduces pollution. 7. Generate financing for restoration 💰Provides resources for large-scale environmental projects. “It’s not just about preserving, restoring, and maintaining, but also about making sure that the resources are not overused.” - Gloria Samana, Elder from the Embera People of Panamá In the latest #LandDialogue webinar on Gender, Biodiversity, and the Role of Women, five change makers came together and we explored how indigenous and local community women are pivotal in safeguarding nature, highlighting the crucial role of indigenous women in biodiversity preservation and #climateaction. Gloria Samana, Josselyn Casama , Aissatou Oumarou, Sara Omi and Cristiane Pankararu shared their experiences and wisdom, emphasising the importance of integrating ancestral knowledge into global policy frameworks. Key Takeaways: - Traditional Knowledge: Indigenous women hold invaluable knowledge about sustainable land management and biodiversity, crucial for combating climate change. - Role of Indigenous Women: They are frontline defenders of their ecosystems, often leading conservation efforts and promoting sustainable practices. - Policy Integration: There's an urgent need to incorporate indigenous perspectives into international climate policies to ensure effective and inclusive solutions. Together, they emphasised that supporting indigenous women and communities is not just an ethical imperative, but also a practical necessity for achieving global climate goals. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this important conversation. Let's continue to uplift and learn from Indigenous voices in our journey towards a sustainable future. 🌍💚 #IndigenousWomen #Biodiversity #TraditionalKnowledge #Sustainability Global Alliance of Territorial Communities Land Portal Foundation Ford Foundation

World Oceans Day 2024: AWAKEN NEW DEPTHS Today, we reflect on the crucial role our oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. At Akashinga, our commitment to marine conservation in Mozambique's Coutada 5 (C5) is a testament to innovative and impactful environmental stewardship. Key Facts: - 2.2 million acres of protected terrestrial and marine areas in C5. - Home to five of the world's seven sea turtle species and the last viable population of dugongs in the Western Indian Ocean. - C5's mangrove forests provide critical ecosystem services, including coastal protection and carbon sequestration, comprising 10% of Mozambique's mangrove network. Our efforts address unregulated fishing, poaching, and habitat destruction, empowering local communities, especially women, to lead conservation initiatives. The success of our all-female ranger programme exemplifies our commitment to gender equality and effective law enforcement. As we celebrate World Oceans Day, we call upon donors, partners, and industry leaders to join us in pioneering sustainable ocean management and protecting our planet's invaluable marine ecosystems. On this World Environment Day, we celebrate women’s leadership and collective action to protect our planet. Since the landmark United Nations Environment and Development Conference (Rio de Janeiro, 1992) and the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995), the international community has remained steadfast that women’s full participation in environmental management and development is essential for a healthy and sustainable future. Today, we honor rural women who play a vital role in global food security, environmental protection, and climate resilience. Producing half of the world’s food, they lead sustainable practices like drought-resistant farming and reforestation, all while adapting to the impacts of climate change. Despite their critical contributions, rural and indigenous women face greater challenges from climate change, making their voices in decision-making more crucial than ever. This year’s theme, "Rural Women Sustaining Nature for Our Collective Future," reminds us that we need to advocate for their inclusion in leadership and decision-making. 🌾 Let’s celebrate their role as food providers and environmental protectors. 💪🏾 Let’s fight for equal opportunities for rural women everywhere. #RuralWomen #ClimateResilience #Biodiversity #GenderEquality #InternationalRuralWomenDay2024 #WomenInAgriculture #Sustainability

📍From June 20th to 23rd, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Youth Climate Meeting organized by Legambiente. ✨ This experience was truly transformative, bringing together passionate minds dedicated to tackling the climate crisis and promoting environmental activism. Mariateresa Imparato emphasized the vital integration of scientific environmentalism and human ecology to advocate for climate justice. 🔍 Intersetionality was the lens through which we examined critical issues, understanding the interconnected nature of social and environmental challenges. We explored how climate justice impacts every facet of life, from sustainable mobility and inclusive work environments to democratic participation, gender equality, and food sustainability. 🚴♂️ The session "Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility" was particularly enlightening. Roberto Scacchi, Carlo Tritto, and Simone nuglio provided valuable insights on reducing air pollution and ensuring mobility as a right through sustainable and inclusive transportation options. 🇪🇺 Another crucial session was "European Climate Policies". Mauro Albrizio, Laura Ferrari, Cosimo Tansini and Emma Pagliarusco discussed the future of European climate policies, emphasizing the need for renewables and combating fake news for a just transition. 🌱 Additionally, the "Food Transition and Animal Wlfare" led by Antonio Morabito, explored the intersection of food transition and animal welfare. Discussions highlighted sustainable practices that promote both environmental health and ethical treatment of animals. 🌎 This meeting reinforced that by adopting an intersectional approach, we can address climate issues comprehensively and pave the way towards a more just and equitable future. #YouthClimateMeeting #Legambiente #ClimateJustice #EnvironmentalActivism #Ecotransfeminism #SustainableMobility #AnimalWelfare #FoodTransition #SocialJustice #EuropeanClimatePolicy

I had some great conversations this week at the #landconf2024 where climate resilience and gender, equity, and social inclusion (GESI) were central themes. Land documentation itself is no silver bullet—it’s the starting point, from where we have to build a targeted yet flexible approach towards addressing the governance challenges. Weak frameworks impede progress, but when we take a holistic approach that incorporates land plus climate, Nature-based Solutions like agroforestry, and GESI considerations, we can address those challenges in a holistic way. Perhaps most importantly, when Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities are empowered and engaged in local governance issues (for example, through community-led mapping exercises), real, tangible outcomes can be achieved. I look forward to collaborating with others working to address these challenges worldwide, and thanks to the conference organizers for putting together an excellent program.
