Did you know composite waste can be turned into cement? In this Kim's Tech Corner episode Kim visits Ursula Kääntee at the Finnsementti cement plant in Lappeenranta Finland to learn about co-processing which turns composite waste in to cement. Finnsementti is one of the companies taking part in the Kimura-project in Finland which offers recycling solutions for industrial composite waste. The crushed composite material provided by Exel and other Kimura-project partners, is utilized in the co-processing cement production, where it can be efficiently utilized without residual ash. The use of composite materials in cement production reduces CO2 emissions. It would appear that the subdued ferrous market is currently in search of more positive sentiment, with both demand and price levels suffering for furnace-ready feed and finished products alike. With that in mind, BIR’s Ferrous Board thought it would be an excellent time to compare global trade patterns outlined in the valuable data compiled by our eminent Statistics Advisor Rolf Willeke with the insight of an expert market analyst. While pondering all the above, I wondered if it wasn’t time for reflection on how our products are viewed on the world stage. On my recent trip to the Recycled Materials Association (formerly ISRI) Convention in Las Vegas, it was suggested that very few people - including those in posts of authority - understood what we do as an industry. Many were amazed that recycled steel is, and has been for many hundreds of years, reformed and reconstituted over and over again into many items used by us all on a daily basis. John Sacco and his team’s excellent Repurposed series on YouTube (https://lnkd.in/djn257_Y) clearly emphasizes recyclers’ vital role in the metal production process; indeed, it is incumbent on all metal recyclers to educate and promote the importance of our industry. We are the solution, not the problem. Supporting the use of the term “recycled steel” to describe our products, as highlighted in Rolf’s report to this Mirror and underscored by the rebranding of ISRI to ReMA, is extremely helpful in elevating the importance of our recycled, furnace-ready material. These small changes to the terminology we use on a daily basis can have a big impact on how our industry is perceived by the outside world. Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Act sets a target for the bloc to meet 25% of EU demand for critical minerals by 2030 through recycling, crucially including rare earths. However, there are already worrying signs that on our current trajectory we will miss these recycling targets. To catch up we need to look at how we reshape the current market model and re-direct opportunities back to European companies. Every day we export recyclable magnets from Europe to third markets, simply because we have neither installed or lost the capacity and capability to recycle them onshore – this has to stop now! To turn Europe's raw materials supply into a strength, commoditizing secondary raw materials is essential for a circular economy. CRMA’s ambitious targets are aimed at enhancing Europe’s recycling processing technologies and capacity, driving collaboration between industry, innovators, and academia to improve technologies for extracting critical raw materials and circular product design. As I say in the article, extended producer responsibility can be a key part of the solution, but challenges like high recycling costs and inadequate collection systems need to be solved. The result of solid collaborative work with BIR national member associations, the paper highlights that chemical recycling needs careful consideration and well-informed, market-based policies to ensure that it complements rather than competes with traditional #recycling methods.♻️ ➡️ #Mechanicalrecycling must remain the preferred method on a large scale whereas chemical recycling should be used only for hard-to-recycle end-of-life #plastics, insists the global federation of recycling industries. This position paper on chemical recycling follows shortly after one on #extendedproducerresponsibility, which was published by BIR in November last year. Describing chemical recycling as “a nascent technology”, BIR urges caution in its deployment and calls for the introduction of a harmonized definition of chemical recycling that excludes fuel production. ➡️ Chemical recycling processes are extremely #energy-intensive and some that are currently available produce more #greenhouse gas emissions than primary production using fossil fuels during the production process, the position paper points out. For these and other reasons, chemical recycling should be used only for materials that mechanical recycling cannot efficiently or economically process, it argues. ➡️ In addition, chemical recycling should not be allowed to override the need for #designforrecycling, according to BIR. #Policies should focus on eliminating hard-to-recycle plastics and on incentivizing the design of plastics for #reuse or mechanical recycling, thus reducing the requirement for new resources, it says. As the country celebrates #ZeroWasteMonth this January, we are proud to share our continuing success to contribute to cleaner and greener Philippines! Last year, our plants and Geocycle Philippines co-processed 1.02 million tons of wastes as alternative fuels and raw materials, a 9% increase from 2022 to lessen consumption of virgin natural resources and high-carbon traditional fuels in operations. This is aligned with our sustainability commitment to produce essential building materials with less natural resources and lower carbon emissions by reusing waste from industries and communities.
