I butted my way into a conversation on this excellent post recently.
They were covering some of my Go-to topics:
Kiwis
Olympics
Kiwis AT the Olympics
and
Cheeseburger eating competitions at the Olympics!
I feel my contribution moved the conversation along helpfully when I pointed out my 2002 and 2006 Olympic Brakeman, Matt Dallow had managed 21 Cheeseburgers in the allotted hour of competition.
It reminded me of other stupid stuff we used to do while on tour qualifying for the Olympics.
One particularly stupid one, I was undefeated in: Underwater swimming for distance.
For those with knowledge, please understand that I have a) stopped doing this and b) been instructed in the error of my ways. However remembering it reminded me of recent posts around stress and recovery.
I would generally swim at least a length further underwater than my team mates. I did this by ignoring all my body's feedback that I needed to breathe.
I had a system that allowed me to override all my natural impulses and the relevance to the workplace (and the reason I stopped doing it) was that the potential to start making catastrophic decisions went up as my fatigue increased and oxygen levels decreased.
The workplace, until very recently, presented fatigue as a badge of honour and achievement. In effect celebrating pushing to the end of one's limits with no regard for the sustainability of this approach nor for the potential reduction in quality of performance and thinking that occurs.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Factor in, and plan your fatigue and recovery strategies.
What would you say is the first sign that your fatigue is, or is about to, impact performance?
What is a point prior to that, that you could identify as the moment you need to stop and re-energise?

Calling all Kiwis. 📢 Here’s the only pre-Olympics post your international mates need to see. ⬇

During the Olympics, we all look out for ‘our’ athletes, but we don’t know much about ‘their’ ones.
So, as an international gesture of goodwill on behalf of New Zealand, here’s a 2-min guide to ‘𝗞𝗶𝘄𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀’.
It’s designed to inform non-Kiwis and Kiwis alike on critical matters such as:
• Where and how to spot a Kiwi
• NZ’s greatest ever Olympians
• Five Kiwis to watch in Paris
• NZ’s biggest Olympic scandal
• Our love/hate relationship with Aussies
We also reveal the ‘real’ medal table (where Kiwis are way ahead of the USA) and the blue-ribbon event where we well and truly punch above our weight.

U.S. Sport Policy- important report 👇
This important report was released this week – the Commission on the State of the US Olympics and Paralympics

Embedded are many important conversations about the quality of the U.S. sport system for all that implications for what many of us do and how in the U.S..
Do you know what the Olympic Charter says about chasing medals?
One of the basic ideas about the Olympic Games (not championships) was to gather athletes and through sport build understanding, friendship and tolerance. Important elements in achieving world peace.
This is not applicable with how countries and the public see the Olympics and certainly not how athletes are selected. This is not how the National Olympic Committees set goals and objectives.
As all sports already have world championships the Olympics can loose its magic becoming a championship with the same countries, same athletes and the same competitions. There is no longer room for athletes meeting in the name of world peace. Prestigious Olympic medals is more important and that is up to the IOC members to decide. If that is the decision, then the Olympic Charter must be adjusted. As per today the practice is, in many cases, very different from the official wording in the Olympic Charter.

In the world of sports, competition often drives athletes to push their limits and strive for victory. However, the story of Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar offers a beautiful reminder that generosity and camaraderie can shine even in the heat of competition.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Tamberi and Barshim both reached an extraordinary height of 2.37 meters in the men's high jump final. Despite multiple attempts, neither could surpass this height, leading to a tie. Rather than continuing in a jump-off to determine a single winner, an unforgettable moment of sportsmanship unfolded.
When the officials proposed a jump-off to break the tie, Barshim asked if they could share the gold medal instead. Without hesitation, Tamberi agreed. This unprecedented decision allowed both athletes to stand atop the podium, sharing the glory and joy of their achievement.
This act of generosity and mutual respect transcends the competitive nature of sports. It highlights the values of friendship, respect, and the recognition that success is not solely defined by outdoing another but can also be shared.
The story of Tamberi and Barshim is a powerful example for athletes and non-athletes alike. It teaches us that in life, as in sports, we can celebrate our achievements while also uplifting others. Their decision to share the gold medal reminds us that true greatness lies not just in winning but in our ability to show kindness and empathy, even in the most competitive environments.
In a world often focused on individual success, the generosity shown by these two remarkable athletes offers a profound lesson in the importance of camaraderie and the enduring human spirit.
Interesting moment of team spirit captured in the video.
