Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon’s Post

🌍 Dr. Johannes Bieser and Dr. Martin Otto Paul Ramacher from Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, together with Miha Razinger from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, mentored a challenge for the ECMWF Code for Earth program, which aimed to calculate pollutant concentrations in cities more precisely by using machine learning. This involves downscaling regional models to urban scales. ☁️ 💡 For the first time external partners were able to take part in the challenge. A team of young scientists from Barcelona developed an application based on geo-referenced open source data. The results were presented at the final event in #ReadingUK, and received great interest from ECMWF and Copernicus ECMWF. The researchers also submitted the project to Helmholtz AI to investigate the possibilities of similar approaches for the same purpose and put them into practice. 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 2️⃣ 5️⃣ Johannes Bieser and Martin Ramacher have been invited to propose and mentor another challenge for this year's edition of the ECMWF Code for Earth program. Interested teams can apply soon for the next round of challenges and will receive 5,000 euros if they are successful. 📝 Stay tuned!
