“B Corps are just for show.” I hear this often so I wanted to share how B Lab created the B Impact Assessment and what the purpose was, because as many of us have heard,"You can't improve what you don't measure"📈. What is it ⁉ B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. How did they create the standards🔎 An Advisory Council, Board of Directors, Global Regional Standards Group of business professional, researchers, and regulators (see their background in the comments) came together to create comprehensive evaluation of over 250 metrics aimed at organizations impact on: Governance ➡ Standards related to mission, stakeholder engagement, governance structure and controls, and transparency. Workers ➡ The standards in this section look at how a company treats is employees, including the compensation practices, benefits, training, worker ownership and work environment. Community ➡ This section covers the company’s impact on external community stakeholders, including suppliers, distributors, and the local economy and community, as well as the company’s practices regarding diversity, job creation, civic engagement, and charitable giving. Environment ➡  Standards related to your company’s direct and indirect environmental impacts. Customers ➡ Standards related to the impact that your business model has on your customers and whether you serve underserved populations. Why is a certification needed: Many companies tout their impact or focus on governance, workers, community, etc. But many do not have the accountability mechanisms in place. B Corps certification requires a legal commitment and transparency to making their impact publicly available. These two distinctions give certified organization the tools to make sure companies follow through on their commitments. Lastly and maybe the most clear to me, B Corp certification requires measurements against standards. The alternative is no standards, no measurements, and business as usual. The standards may be not perfect, but like any venture, B Labs iteration and bias towards action is driving business forward.

And since communicating with objects instead of words is quite difficult, it is not surprising that misunderstandings can happen sometimes. I'm the type of person who prefers time over stuff. Also material gifts aka stuff can often cause me to feel resentful, even if they are well-intentioned. 💚 💚 💚 As part of the #SustainableFriday by Vast Forward Bildpunktmobilisierung GmbH, I researched the topic of love languages in connection with sustainable giving a year ago. Since then I have seen some changes in the landscape of gifting sustainably, however there are still more opportunities. Among other things, I came across a study by Jeff Galak, who studied the psychology of giving. I then combined it with the principle of the 5 Love Languages and put together a few ideas. What drives me? Obviously a fear for what my children's future holds, what they'll have to face - and the fall out from how we're abusing this planet. But also I really struggle with injustice. Learning about vivisection in my teens, hearing about defenseless animals being caged and used for testing broke my heart, so I gave up eating meat there and then and started paying much closer attention to the ethics of the brands I bought. And now, the injustice of hearing report after report of how we're poisoning this planet we rely on for everything. Where will it stop? When we've poisoned every drop of water and every square cm of land with forever chemicals, pesticides, sewage, oil spills, microplastics? What then? What will we drink and where will we grow our food? And it's not just humans that depend on clean water and land to survive. Every living creature depends on a healthy habitat in which to live and fresh water and food to nourish them. This is their home too. Isn't it time we all cleaned up our act? I think the small amount of effort required from us as individuals is worth it. Thanks Paul Ronalds for resurfacing this 2023 article. It's even more timely 12 months on as every sector is awash in impact reports with these "bogus metrics". Jo Barraket AM also has us reflecting on over-claiming attribution of impact, and failures to account for the "process" of creating change..acknowledging all the actors at play, in her recent posts. Quality impact reporting looks a lot less sexy, but a lot of what we see today is just marketing and soundbites. If every report looks like this, we're just kidding ourselves and contributing to the white noise. "Impact can be defined by what it is not. First and foremost, activities are not impact. Trainings, workshops, delivering programs—that’s not impact. Nor are bogus metrics like “lives touched” and “people reached.” Awareness and attitudes don’t matter if it doesn’t lead to action; action doesn’t matter if it doesn’t lead to change. What people know, what they say, and what they do may be necessary steps on the way to impact, but it’s the end result that matters." https://lnkd.in/evNmwbet

This is something we are always thinking and talking about in our work at the Sorenson Impact Institute - how can we measure and report impact in a meaningful way, so that organizations can take tangible action to change what they are doing and maximize the impact they are having. The point in the article - that funders need to demand meaningful impact measurement and reporting - is so important. What organizations will make the effort and take the reputational risk of reporting their impact if they can get the funding they need without it? Of course, some will because they want to understand and therefore grow their impact, but there's a lot less incentive...
