Fifty years ago today (during NeoCon’s sixth year), Herman Miller introduced a revolutionary concept in office furniture: Chadwick Modular Seating. Free from the constraints of straight walls, in-the-way columns, and linear space planning, this modular system offered a range of dramatic planning possibilities. Designer Don Chadwick—37 at the time and on the precipice of a storied partnership with Herman Miller—brought a new perspective to the brand through material and technological innovation, and his first design for Herman Miller is as relevant today as it was a half-century ago. You may have seen it at Design Days in Chicago this week, or in the pages of Ideas magazine to celebrate the anniversary.
