Most leaving the military are quickly trying to scrub the military jargon from their resume, which is one of the tasks we help with. However, this is not ideal if you are trying to get into *certain* Federal jobs and of course, jobs with defense contractors. Recruiters looking for prior military will crawl LinkedIn searching military keywords to find veterans, some get frustrated when they find out many veterans are flying under the radar with civilian terminology. Only convert the language you are using to get hired if you are targeting civilian employers or more administrative and clerical Federal jobs. Decision makers for Federal jobs such as Foreign Service Officers and TSA K9 handlers understand military verbiage very well and they look for it. Know your audience.

Are you a military spouse? "If you're a military spouse, you may be eligible to apply using a non-competitive process designed to help you get a job in the federal government." "Federal agencies can use the military spouse non-competitive hiring process to fill positions on either a temporary or permanent basis. You’re eligible if you are: A spouse of an active duty member of the armed forces. A spouse of a service member who is 100% disabled due to a service-connected injury at the time of separation from military service. A spouse of a service member killed while on active duty. You are no longer eligible if you remarry. You must meet certain criteria for each of these eligibility categories. Learn more about the specific criteria for military spouses. Your eligibility does not entitle you to a job within the Federal Government. You must still apply and meet qualification standards and additional requirements, such as a background investigation." https://lnkd.in/dkC96a2i Follow us on X @FBISanJuan #fbi #careers #governmentjobs #federalemployees #militarytransition #militaryspouse

Sr. Technical Recruiter | Recruit security-cleared engineers & scientists | Enthusiastic people-person with a mutant curiosity gene
For 10 years I had the distinct privilege of assisting military professionals as they transitioned from military to pursue civilian work through the Air Force's Transitional Assistance Program (TAP). I'd discuss interview questions with the monthly TAP group in person then conduct a mock interview during class with a participant. Participants often felt overwhelmed as they considered their transitions to civilian work. It's been years now since I attended those TAP briefings (the work became privatized, and I'm not permitted to volunteer any more). However, I still have a passion to help our armed forces professionals as they leave their military careers for civilian ones. Let me share a couple of tips: ⭐Know how to translate your experience (and jargon) into civilian speak. ⭐Practice your answers to typical interview questions aloud before a phone screen or interview. ⭐Don't use military jargon or acronyms. ⭐Ask for a mock interview - you may find that help from a TAP coordinator, a recruiter you may know personally, or a HR manager/supervisor you know. It'll help. #militarytransitions #hiring #interviewtips #TAP

Military Jargon: Breaking Down the Barriers Have you ever found yourself puzzled by military speak? 🤔 It's not uncommon for civilian employers to feel bewildered by the jargon Veterans use during interviews or on their CVs. (Service leavers and veterans take note, you need to adapt!) From "Orders of the Day" to "PPE" (Personal Protective Equipment), these terms can leave recruiters scratching their heads. Take for example, the term "Overhead" - in the military, it often means air support, but in a business context, it's all about expenses. Such differences can sometimes create obstacles to understanding a Veteran's true skills and experience. Understanding these terms is crucial not just for communication, but for appreciating the unique skills Veterans bring to civilian roles. As Veterans adapt to the civilian workforce, it's equally important for employers to bridge this gap. This mutual understanding can pave the way for successful partnerships and a more diversified workforce. Have you encountered any military jargon that left you confused? The military promotes based on potential — but the private sector hires based on experience. They don't hire people to teach them how to do a job... They hire those who have already done it. So, what experience do you have that shows you can do the job you want? That’s the key to making a strong case in the civilian job market. Got questions about military transition or the job search?
