Back in (chilly) Blighty and a lift in a classic car has got me thinking… What has a 1980s Rolls Royce got in common with how we should think about organisations?? Getting into this car was like stepping back in time - everything was unfamiliar and novel and odd (in a good way)! When we step into an organisation with a ‘classic’ culture, we can have a similar experience. Sometimes delightful and sometimes a not so delightful throwback! Some traits of ‘classic cultures’ match those of classic cars: ➡️ Heritage brand ➡️ Paternalistic ➡️ Choosing to stick with tried and tested systems rather than focus on innovation ➡️ Carefully looking after and maintaining every part of the organisation, to make sure it still works into the future I’m currently developing some work on organisational archetypes, and would be very interested to hear about any examples of ‘classic culture’ organisations. What makes the Ultimate Team?? Integrity, Discpline, Communication, Skill, Precision, Performance under pressure… A few years back I had the privilege to meet some of the pilots of The Red Arrows. A team known for being the best. Their badge on their uniforms shows the aircrafts in their trademark diamond nine formation, with the motto…. Éclat, a French word meaning "brilliance" or "excellence". After spending some time with them I was interested in what they looked for when it came to recruiting their team. The main thing I took was ‘Trust’… They talked about excellence/ brilliance but main element I found was Trust between each other… They were confident in the guy next to them to perform the right maneoure at the precise time in the most pressured of environments. Meaning when recruiting potential candidates, they focused more on the correct individuals with the relevant skills that fitted into the team culture & got on well with the rest of the group. When creating the Ultimate Team getting the right people in the room who can be trusted & passionate about the team can sometimes be more important than the most qualified candidate. #redarrows #teamwork #Éclat

The solution to Boeing’s problem is not just bringing in the top executives, in my opinion, as a lifelong student of aviation and 30 year Boeing engineer. Great aircraft are designed, analyzed and tested by teams of talented engineers who are dedicated to the company and their profession. Boeing lost the team members through retirement and attrition. Top talents of last 30 years flocked to the Tech Industry where the money and prestige lies. More over Global Companies have no special loyalty to a country or company. Short of building up great teams of engineers, I do not see any short cut the past greatness. This may take 5 to 10 years of dedicated effort by management and technical leadership. Godspeed to my beloved Boeing Company!
David Calhoun was hired by Boeing to be an inspirational leader in a time of crisis amid the 737 Max crashes. Fixing Boeing was always going to be a tough job, but it's plainly clear that the company doesn't need more motivation. What will be required to turn Boeing around are real and profound improvements in quality control, full transparency, and the ability to hold leadership 100% accountable. I know many are clamoring for an outsider to swoop in and take over, but I have serious doubts that anyone who hasn't been there in the trenches through all the current and past turmoil will be the right person to do the hard work to fix Boeing. I believe a committed Boeing insider needs to be given the authority to right the ship.

What beautiful sentiments about a fulfilling career in aviation.
For one last time… This is your Captain speaking… As we descended into EWR on my final approach, memories of my entire 34-year career floated across the clouds like butterflies. I saw the smiles of millions of happy passengers, thousands of loving reunions, hundreds of safe landings, and the face of my favorite passenger I’ve ever flown with—the one who sacrificed so much for me to get to this moment—my Momma. A close friend and retired pilot advised me to soak it all in and take things slow. Calm as Captains do, my heart began to swell as I saw the water cannon salute and held back what felt like water cannons behind my eyes. Then the wheels kissed the ground—a perfect landing. Now everyone’s asking me, “What’s next?” And I tell them, “This is only just the beginning of what I believe is the best chapter of my life.” I plan to spend my days inspiring young people to follow their dreams by turning them into goals, shattering glass ceilings, and defying all odds. I’ll be calling in my friends from all around the world to share their experiences to empower the next generation of trailblazers who are destined for greatness. If they can see it, they can be it. Today, I may be retired from flying airplanes at United Airlines, but in the words of one of the G.O.A.T.s (Greatest of All Time), Kobe Bryant, “Job’s not finished.” It’s been a pleasure to be your Captain and an absolute honor to fly the friendly skies 🛬 📸 photo credit: Brianna Cabassa

It is time for radical change. Just changing the people is not the answer. Boeing needs to heed the warnings about the disconnect in its businesses. That means that management needs to be closer to the manufacturing and soul of its business units. Boeing should seriously consider a breakup into at least 2 discrete parts. Civil and Military/Space. Take the civil side and bring it back to Seattle. Leave the military and space teams back near the seat of government. #Boeing #breakup #Civilaviation #MilitarySpace
