In my career I had the privilege of managing a range of engineering projects. Through this experience I have learnt that the role of the project manager is to “serve” the project team, the business, and the customer. Serving the project team means: - · Making simple plans that everyone understands. · Working with the engineers to come up with realistic estimates. · Providing the resources needed. · Contributing to the resolution of unforeseen issues. Serving the business means: - · Providing truthful and honest progress reports to the business. · Proposing solutions to overcome unforeseen issues. · Protecting the project profitability when customers request changes. Serving the customer means: - · Facilitating the exchange of technical and commercial information with the customer. · Helping the customer to manage unforeseen issues by providing realistic plans. · Ensuring that the project delivery is in-line with the agreed contract. In summary, the role of effective project managers is to serve the project team, the business, and the customer by providing an environment of trust where engineers can excel individually and as a team to deliver what the customer requires. I work with overstretched leaders of SMEs in the engineering sector to help them prepare their business for sustainable growth. 6moHow true Hervé, yet little practiced. A while ago, I interviewed with a well-known management consultancy where it was made clear that the primary role of the consultant is to contribute to the salaries of the partners. Unsurprisingly, I declined the subsequent job offer. The culture that we nurture in our organisations has a large impact on how free people feel to serve their colleagues.
