Our new Video Insight demonstrates that a glass window can affect light’s intensity in interesting (and useful!) ways. For example, light does not always reflect 4% when it hits an uncoated glass surface — the reflected power is sometimes more and sometimes less. Using measurements with an uncoated window and linearly polarized light, we explore the polarization-dependent and angle-dependent effects on the light’s intensity. In addition, we demonstrate an approach for finding Brewster’s angle. Throughout, we refer to the Fresnel equations for reflection and transmission to help determine what to expect when linearly polarized light is incident upon a surface. #VideoInsights #photonics #optics

Hi all, Our paper "A Unified Framework for Discovering Discrete Symmetries" is accepted at the prestigious AISTATS 2024 conference. We will be presenting this work at Valencia, Spain later this year. This work builds on our previous paper presented at the AISTATS 2023 (https://lnkd.in/gbBEKhPh) conference last year. Paper:- https://lnkd.in/gDPqcr_c In this work, we develop a unified framework that enables symmetry discovery across a broad range of subgroups including locally symmetric, dihedral and cyclic subgroups. The structure of the architecture enables us to leverage multi-armed bandit algorithms and gradient descent to efficiently optimize over the linear and the non-linear functions, respectively, and to infer the symmetry that is ultimately learnt. We also discuss the necessity of the matrix-valued functions in the architecture. This work was done in collaboration with Pavan Karjol and huge thanks to Professor Prathosh AP, PhD and Professor Aditya Gopalan for their guidance and support.
