⬇ This is such a real and relevant scenario. For the past 4+ years, I've been learning and experiencing what it means to be in a leadership position in the sustainability industry, as a Founder + CEO of a circular materials startup and a Fractional Sustainability Officer, helping companies with their impact and sustainability stories. 🌱 One takeaway from observing and learning from within the sustainability industry: the people working hard to solve the problem often get the most pushback because they are out in front talking about it, whereas the ones causing most of the problems are silent and run under the radar. I’ve begun to understand that the solution will involve all of us and especially the ones causing the problems. If we don’t involve or fix the root, the tree will most certainly not survive. The root in our current society, is industry. It’s what’s making the world go round. If I were to answer the question posed in this post, it would be Transparency. Consumers are smart, and they are getting smarter. They will eventually see the truth about what is happening, whether you as leadership are in front of the conversation or you’re hiding from it. Kyla Scanlon recently had a video explaining why Trust is the most expensive commodity in the world at this moment. If industry wants trust, they must tell the truth and stop running from it. From supply chain transparency and sustainable sourcing to product design and circular business models. The CEO has asked you to address these claims in a memo for H&M’s senior leadership. What do you advise the company to do?" That's the question asked to 70+ Corporate Sustainability students in their memo assignment this week. It's one of the classes I'm assisting (as a teaching fellow). We talk about a new topic in corporate sustainability every week. Every other week, there's either a case or memo assignment. Check regional and national-specific regulations on claims; Check ISO requirements on claims such as "sustainable", etc. Be ready to conduct the whole lifecycle assessment of your product/product line / whatever you want to label as "sustainable". And what do you think?
