The world is abuzz with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the marvels of data exchange through communication. While many are familiar with wired and wireless communication (yes, the ones with antennas!), did you know there are industrial solutions for very short distances that can replace traditional industrial connectors? Meet Inductive Coupling. If you're acquainted with inductive sensors, these will look quite similar. However, instead of one sensor (that detects a piece of metal), you place two inductive units facing each other with just a few millimeters of air gap. Inductive couplers transmit data and power across this air gap without any contact. They offer a wear-free alternative to slip rings or connectors that endure high mechanical stress. This innovation extends maintenance intervals, reduces unplanned downtimes, and boosts cycle rates. Plus, they are as easy to connect as traditional connectors. Each inductive coupler set includes a primary side on the control end and a secondary side on the sensor/actuator end. The primary side powers the secondary side through the air interface, while the secondary side transmits data from the connected sensors and actuators. Inductive couplers are versatile in automation. They can be used on rotating workstations, workpiece frames, and the end-of-arm tooling of robots. Despite not being a new technology, awareness and usage are still relatively low. At this year’s Hannover Messe, Turck's booth showcased the impressive capabilities of inductive couplers, demonstrating quick changeovers of applications without any mechanical unplugging or plugging.
