What is More Sustainable? 🤔 🌱📦🌎♻️—the answer is surprising The Golden Rules of Packaging Sustainability—Number 1 As a sustainability and policy professional in the packaging sector for 17 years, I have often been asked, “What is more sustainable?”—whether it’s paper versus plastic, reusable versus single-use, or compostable versus recyclable. Let’s face it we all like easy, simple, one size fits all answers, right? But maybe these constructs aren’t the right place start. My first Golden Rule of Packaging Sustainability through years of experience has become—I can’t always guarantee which packaging choice is most sustainable, but we can be certain that the least sustainable option is the one that doesn’t work. Packaging serves a purpose: solving problems related to portion control, food preservation, marketing, loss prevention, and transportation. Before we focus on minimizing the environmental impact of packaging, it must first fulfill its intended role. When packaging fails, the sustainability impact of lost product or other factors can often be greater than the net environmental impact of the packaging itself. Terms like broken, spoiled, lost, expired, returned and others are just some of the descriptions used when packaging fails...and they all have an environmental cost. Societal debates often revolve around binary choices like—paper versus plastic, compostable versus recyclable, and others —but what’s right for one product or market may not be suitable for another. Perhaps end users have access to recycling but not composting facilities. Maybe paper provides insulation value, while plastics offer weight savings. The key lies in understanding the role packaging plays and first selecting options that perform and then looking at what has the lowest impact. Ironically in one situation one form or substrate may be optimal but in others another may provide an advantage. At Novolex, our mantra when we formed the company was established as Packaging Choice, Innovation, and Sustainability. This simple phrase has long provided a true road map to sustainable packaging. Stay tuned for more golden rules gleaned from my 17 years in packaging sustainability and policy. 🌱📦🌎 #Sustainability #Packaging #Innovation #Environment Add your thoughts in the comments.

Summer and vacation time is often a time for reflection and for observing your surroundings. Currently we all see the impact of plastic ending up in nature, it is obvious that a change is needed. The fiber-based cap I am holding in my hand plays an important part of such a revolutionary change. It may look small, but the technology we have developed at Blue Ocean Closures has the power to replace billions of plastic caps amounting to hundreds of thousands of tons of plastic. It can be done for your beverage cartons, for your supplement bottles, for your glass jars, and for many other applications. Curious to find out how? Reach out to us and let’s discuss how we can support you with your sustainability challenges. #sustainability #fiberbased #innovation #closures #recyclableaspaper
