I used to do user interviews all wrong. I would take notes while I was interviewing, which led to me not being present and missing important details all while furiously scribbling down what were hardly accurate quotes. Then I would then have to rewatch the entire interview, pause, and take notes, resume, pause, and take more notes. It took me literal hours to pull out all the insights, affinity map and then observe key themes. Now times this by 5-10 interviews 🫠 Sound familiar? And then I met Dovetail–all you need to do is upload videos or transcripts from your user interviews, they take care of the rest: Makes a transcript for video interviews ✅ Highlights the key takeaways ✅ Analyzes the highlights across all interviews to detect themes ✅ Creates video reels of related highlights and integrates with tools like Slack so that you can share with your stakeholders! 🤯 …all of this in literal minutes while securely storing your data and not using it to train models (*cough *cough *ChatGPT…) It’s seriously magic. I’ve been using Dovetail for over a year now and it’s seriously a game changer. Not only has it saved me countless hours (I filmed this video in just over a minute), but it’s also helped me build credibility as a designer and get buy-in from stakeholders. A win-win-win. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 👋🏻 I'm Emilie–I help people transition to UX and upskill as a designer. 💬 Like and comment to support 🔄 Repost to help other designers P.S. I design think, therefore I design am.

I used Dovetail as a UX Researcher, and since transitioning into Product Design, Dovetail has found a new home in my workflow. I record all of my design reviews and upload them into Dovetail. Once they've been transcribed I'll go back through the meeting and pull out all of the interesting bits, new ideas to explore, critique to iterate on, etc. This frees me up to focus on the conversation during the meetings, and also prevents any important ideas from getting lost in the shuffle. Of course, I could use any transcription tool in this way, but Dovetail's 'highlights' and 'tags' allow me to connect concepts across meetings and then see everything that has been said about a topic across all of my design meetings in an instant. Total game changer.

Steve Portigal has an excellent book on interviewing users. I made my students read sections from it, and they enjoyed it! (If any of my students Is reading this please say hi) The thing that stuck out most in the book is that we need to stay silent. Embrace the awkwardness! He gave an example of a documentary (grizzly man) where the director didn't interrupt the interviewer. The long pause was ensured by a poignant outburst. Which would have been missed otherwise. There are other really good stories in the book! But yes! Don't take notes during the interview, lest you miss out on an important detail (verbal or non verbal) Dovetail for the win! For those of you who do in person interviews, have a team mate take notes instead? I don't know... Maybe Steve can elaborate!

Otter.ai is another tool that is quite accurate for taking interviews too, please give it a try.

i gave dovetail a shot but wasn't crazy about the analysis. it was fast, which was nice, but the quality wasn't great. might give it another try though.

Thank you so much. It just solved my problem. I recently had a chance to see the name of this tool while working on my skills. I was told I needed to do some research on it, but a day later, you hit my feed with a solution. It saved me a lot of time. Again, thanks! 😀 Emilie Mazurek

Thanks for sharing! Would love to hear more about how others organize their tags. I also tried the auto-AI-highlight feature and couldn't bulk delete the dozens of highlights that were created for me, but am curious to know if anyone else ran into that.

Something I love to do is to use your engineering or product team as note-takers during interviews. This is a great way to get them direct insights into what users are thinking and feeling, and it helps a ton with building empathy. So you don't have to. Or you could just use Dovetail! 🤣
