Chroma 0285 - In Which Elmoatasem Ragab Explores the Art of Light and Imperfection - Part 1 Despite all efforts to eliminate them, lens flares persist, even in the most advanced lenses. That’s the beauty of reality - imperfection is inevitable. And these imperfections are what make visual effects feel authentic. In this mentorship session, Elmoatasem Ragab shared valuable insights on lens flares and light interaction. He discussed how light behaves differently through a lens compared to how it reaches our eyes, and why understanding these nuances is essential in VFX. Elmoatasem explained, “Light passing through glass will always have a margin of imperfection, no matter how carefully you design it or how much you try to minimize it. Interestingly, in visual effects, we embrace these imperfections. While CG imagery starts as perfect, we intentionally introduce flaws to make it look real.” While lens manufacturers chase optical perfection, we in VFX embrace the flaws - those subtle details that make an image feel real. At Alpha Chromatica, no one gets to tell us what not to teach. I've seen many schools break their curriculum and tier their education behind paywalls. But at Alpha, we believe in providing open access to a complete and uncompromised education. Every student gets the full depth and breadth of knowledge they need to excel in VFX. We take the time to deeply explore topics that help us understand, replicate, and truly appreciate the art of VFX compositing. Ready to refine your compositing skills and stand out in the VFX industry? Join us at Alpha Chromatica, where every lesson is a step towards mastering the art of compositing. P.S.
