At HF Integration Pty Ltd, we're working with major mining companies aiming to decarbonise their operations. These organisations recognise the importance of addressing key human factors challenges to ensure success. Here are six common challenges we see from a human factors perspective: 1. Operators have limited ability to influence equipment design: Operators may find themselves working with prototype equipment whose design they have limited influence over. This prompts the need to develop work arounds and overcome conflicts between Work As Imagined by the OEM, and Work As Done by the operators. Some of the operation, inspection and maintenance tasks that need to be performed may not become clear until after the technology has been in use for some time. 2. Integrating new systems with legacy infrastructure: The integration of new systems with legacy infrastructure is a major challenge. Effective involvement of end users and consideration of their requirements is critical to smooth integration while maintaining operational continuity. 3. Assessing the impact of novel systems on existing working practices: The introduction of new technologies can disrupt existing working practices. Human Factors risk assessments are essential to identify and mitigate potential errors while optimising the benefits of the new technology. 4. Managing safety critical controls associated with decarb technology: New technology may require re-evaluating existing safety critical controls and developing new ones. The hazards and degraded conditions associated with novel technologies may also not be fully understood. Supporting the human role in managing the safety of these new technologies is crucial. 5. Staying ahead of changes to training and competency requirements: The introduction of decarbonising technologies means people will need to possess new skills, competencies and knowledge. Training and competency development should be proactive to ensure operators are well-prepared for the evolving landscape. 6. Managing the multi-phase rollout of decarb technology: Decarbonising is a major undertaking, executed in multiple phases and over many years. This means that a “current operations” baseline might look very different by the time the technology is eventually rolled out at scale. Clear definition of the future operating concept, supported by an understanding of the critical tasks that people will need to carry out, is key. This needs to consider the influence of other factors that may be completely separate to decarbonisation, such as increasing automation. We're committed to addressing these challenges by integrating human factors principles in major decarbonising projects. Stay tuned for updates on our exciting projects, and feel free to reach out if you're interested in collaborating or learning more about our work. https://lnkd.in/gNnY5BvF
