It was a lovely surprise this morning. I was informed that my article was featured in yesterday’s newsletter and published on Weshare We've created a safe space to reflect 12 Sep 2023 Service Delivery Manager, Adeshola Akanji, encourages colleagues to reflect on their experiences at work through dedicated forums like Schwartz rounds. What is a Schwartz round and what’s involved? Schwartz rounds were started by a healthcare lawyer called Kenn Schwartz, who died of lung cancer in 1995. Schwartz rounds create a space for colleagues working within healthcare to reflect on the emotional and social aspects of their job. What is your motivation to attend? I am passionate about supporting staff members to gain insight through reflection on the experience of others and helping them to develop trust and be able to share their experience as well, so that we can have a collective learning experience from the Schwartz round. What do you get out of the meetings, and would you recommend attending? I was a panel member in a Schwartz round in March 2023, the topic was, “Lean on me”. This enabled me to share my experience with others and learn from the experience of the other panel members and the audience. I continue to recommend that my colleagues attend future meetings. What is your advice to colleagues thinking about going? A Schwartz round is an exceptional platform to reflect together over individual or shared experiences, learn from each other and take back learnings into their day to day lives. I will encourage colleagues to attend future Schwartz rounds either as a panel member or part of the audience. Why do you come to work? Resilient....not sure I like the word anymore....as it has as many negative connotations as positive in the workforce these days, especially with the rise of burnout, exhaustion, and poor mental health being a universal issue across all industries. Oxford dictionary meaning rings true however: (of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. "babies are generally far more resilient than new parents realize" The very nature of what we do for a career makes us resilient...however, job design, workplace well-being, and taking an integrated approach to our responsibilities as an individual, a team member, and most importantly as an organisation will be necessary for a thriving future. Despite it looks like I am having a lie-down 😴 .... I am very excited to be talking about it in a BIG PICTURE sense in regards to the future of our profession on a global platform with Sarah Hoggan DVM from the USA and Andy Green from the UK next week. We all share different perspectives but have the same #commonpurpose and #goal...patient advocacy and how this melds with our people advocacy in 2024.
