Here I am, starting my year off playing my role as a #groupie for ACEVO... Jane Ide OBE HonDUniv and I have joked that if ACEVO had a badge scheme (think Girl Guide sashes for those who know and have one of these somewhere in a storage box like me), I would have collected many! One of the best pieces of advice Philippa Gitlin gave me when I started at FARA was to join ACEVO. The support of collective wisdom, and the collaboration has been hugely valuable to me in my role and for FARA, as I have been able to draw this down and apply it to the work we are trying to do on a day-to-day basis. The waters may be tough to chart for many in the charity sector over the coming year. Being part of conversations and connecting with others over this time will help us all. Both on a personal level to help keep a steady head through sharing the challenges, and also on an organisational level to help share resources and thinking. I have, across my career, always tried to link up with others in similar roles or doing similar things, as I believe conversations and sharing are an important part of ongoing learning and growth (and also having people who you can laugh or cry with who understand!). Find your tribe (or tribes!) they are so important. #peersupport #charity #conversations #ongoinglearning
We asked Libby Gordon, CEO of FARA Charity & Shops, what was her favourite thing about attending #ACEVOFest - here's what she said:

When it comes to Will-writing, clarity is key. A degree of uncertainty in the meaning of words in a Will can particularly affect charities. When there is ambiguity in Wills, this leads to the court deciding whether the Will should be rectified or decide what words in the document mean. For charities named in Wills, it's a reminder of the importance of clear communication with supporters about their official names and the specific projects they wish to fund. In mark phillips extensive experience, he has found that it seems that, for many fundraisers and charities, thanking can be an afterthought. That is even despite the fact that there are many reasons that great thanking can have such a massive impact on a charity’s bottom line. The act of appreciation is not just a polite gesture, but a cornerstone of building lasting relationships and, more importantly, sustaining a healthy philanthropic ecosystem. In this article, Mark shares the four key reasons that great thanking can have such a massive impact on a charity’s bottom line as well as recommendations about what you need to include if you want to nurture long-term support. https://lnkd.in/gt3AbqPr

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world. https://lnkd.in/gHS3TB6C #fundraising #nonprofits #notforprofits
