Shipping, air freight and logistics companies say operations are largely returning to normal after an unprecedented technology outage threatened to wreak havoc across global supply chains. Early on July 19, computer systems around the world were brought to a standstill. A faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused major disruption to Microsoft’s operating system, affecting sectors from banking and trading to air and rail travel. Loss off access to shipping lines and schedules and tracking went haywire, but We battled through…. and had a gin #Logistics #SupplyChain #FreightForwarding #GlobalLogistics #ShippingSolutions #Warehousing #Transportation #Cargo #SupplyChainManagement #LogisticsCompany #Freight #ImportExport #TradeLogistics #LogisticsManagement #LogisticsServices #InternationalShipping #3PL #LogisticsTech #SmartLogistic #EcoFriendlyLogistics

Alright, folks, time to talk tech troubles! Freight companies worldwide got hit hard today by one of the biggest IT outages in history, thanks to a Crowdstrike and Microsoft meltdown. This disaster has thrown a wrench into the works for many global ports and air freight systems, causing chaos everywhere. The Chaos Unfolds: The nightmare began with a failed software update from antivirus company CrowdStrike, which led to Windows PCs around the globe crashing faster than a caffeine-deprived trucker. Airports and ports around the world were thrown into disarray, with highly complex air freight systems taking the heaviest hit. Rising Demand, Limited Capacity: This couldn’t come at a worse time. Global demand for shipping is up 13% year-over-year, but air freight supply has only increased by 3%. With e-commerce booming, especially from China to Europe and the U.S., available capacity is already stretched thin. Now, with planes and cargo out of place, it could take days or even weeks to sort out this mess. The Silver Lining: Despite the chaos, CrowdStrike and Microsoft are implementing fixes, and there’s hope that normal operations will resume soon. But this outage well cause some potential backlogs. #Logistics #Trucking #SupplyChain #Transport #Freight #InterstateTransport #RoadFreight #TransportServices #Linehaul #Procurement #3PL #Warehousing #Warehouse #FreightForwarder #FreightForwarding #Fleet #TruckingNews #MaterialHandling #cargo #Import #Export #OceanFreight #SeaFreight #AirFreight #Sales #Australia

Recent issues have impacted global logistics and port operations, attributed to a faulty update of Microsoft’s cybersecurity software designed to protect cloud networks, created by the Texas-based company Crowdstrike. The incident, which began on July 18, 2024, has caused disruptions at various levels across multiple terminals and maritime, rail, and air lines, as well as other logistics companies worldwide. The affected areas include: ❇️ Air Freight: Air transport has been the most affected, with many global airlines suspending flights. The complex air cargo system faces a recovery period that could last days or weeks, according to some reports. ❇️ Manzanillo, MX: Disruptions were reported during the early hours of July 19. Due to this issue, some containers scheduled for cargo services could not be positioned today. These will be rescheduled for tomorrow, except for those requiring authority intervention, which will be rescheduled for Monday. ❇️ Rotterdam, NL: Reduced operational efficiency due to software failure. ❇️ Hamburg, DE: Delays in cargo processing and congestion due to cybersecurity system issues. ❇️ U.S. Ports: Ports from New York to Houston and Los Angeles reported temporary container terminal closures overnight, but most were operational by early morning. ❇️ U.S. Rail: Union Pacific confirmed via email to CNBC that it experienced varying impacts across its network. ❇️ Asian Ports, including Shanghai, China: Similar disruptions in management and security systems have caused significant delays. After the global IT outage, Microsoft announced on Friday that all previously affected applications and services have “recovered.” SPARX has activated its contingency protocols to identify affected shipments and minimize the impact of these disruptions on our clients. Quality isn’t important until it is. Crowdstrike has reminded the world that releasing an update with a software bug can cause global havoc. Troy Hunt said today’s outage was “the largest IT outage in history”. Quality and testing aren’t optional and it’s easy to get complacent. Could this issue have been found before it was released? Of course, this isn’t an edge case, it’s impacting an entire OS! There’s no way Crowdstrike gets out of this unscathed, and they shouldn’t. Don’t get complacent with your digital presence or business critical applications. The cost of failure is astronomical. #quality #planit #testing #failure #crowdstrike

The CrowdStrike software bug that crashed Microsoft operating systems caused major disruptions at U.S. and global ports, with air freight hit the hardest. Thousands of flights were grounded, leading to significant delays and logistical complications. Niall van de Wouw, chief air freight officer at Xeneta, stated, "Planes and cargo are not where they are supposed to be, and it will take days or even weeks to fully resolve." This disruption comes amid rising global demand and already limited air freight capacity, increasing shipping costs for shippers. Here's what to expect for the next few weeks 👉 https://lnkd.in/gG_79nZy

🛬 While Microsoft apps seem to be coming back online after the Crowdstrike crash last Friday, the airlines are still grappling with the cascading ramifications that it's caused. News of passenger flight delays and cancelations make the social media feeds, but less talked about is the impact the outage has had on cargo operations. Ports, airports, and customs systems have all been thrown into a series of delays and backlogs impacting shipment statuses. Contingency measures are being implemented to handle urgent shipments and manage the backlog. Even if a company wasn't directly affected by the outage, most are still preparing for the knock-on impact they can get from others in the value chain. For more on what's happening elsewhere across the supply chain, check out the latest drop of the Dynamo Dispatch in the comments below.

💡 Important Reminder for All Tech Professionals 💡 In light of the recent global outage caused by a system update at CrowdStrike, I wanted to remind everyone of the critical importance of thorough testing before rolling out any updates. This incident underscores the need to meticulously evaluate all components, including sub-channels, to prevent such disruptions. 🔍 Key Takeaways: 1. Thorough Testing: Always ensure that every part of the system is rigorously tested to identify and fix potential issues before an update goes live. 2. Learning from Mistakes: Outages can be a tough learning experience, but they also offer valuable insights into improving our processes. 3. Stay Resilient: To everyone affected, hang in there. These challenges make us stronger and drive us to enhance our systems. Let’s continue striving for excellence and reliability in our tech solutions. #TechCommunity #SystemUpdate #QualityAssurance #Resilience #LearningExperience https://lnkd.in/gpGX_vYX

The recent #CrowdStrike crisis is just another reminder of how fragile the supply chain system is. Starting with a wake-up call during COVID, and then the recent Red Sea diversions, there continue to be concerns about supply chain fragility and lack of redundancy built into the system. Here's more on how companies should be addressing potential disruptions within their own organizations. https://lnkd.in/emsCn2yR #supplychain #logistics #RedSeaCrisis #logisticsoperations
