Choosing a landscape architect is a crucial decision that can significantly impact the design and functionality of your outdoor space. Here are some ways to avoid red flags when selecting a landscape architect: 1.) Verify Credentials with Precision: In the realm of landscaping services, the tagline "Design, Build, & Maintain" is commonplace, but it's crucial to discern who is spearheading the design phase. Neglecting to scrutinize credentials may lead to a landscape that lacks cohesion. Prioritize professionals with proven expertise, whether it be a certified Landscape Architect or a qualified Landscape Designer. 2.) Tangible Results Speak Volumes: Trust your instincts when it comes to evaluating landscaping services. Many adept salespeople in the industry may prioritize monetary gains over delivering genuine results. Request a comprehensive portfolio, and don't shy away from probing into their direct involvement in past projects. Let the tangible outcomes in their portfolio be the true measure of their capabilities. 3.) The Power of a Robust Team: Elevate your expectations by seeking an Architect or Designer who operates within the strength of a collaborative team. A solitary approach may fall short when dealing with the multifaceted nature of landscape projects. Opt for professionals backed by a capable and skilled team, ensuring that your vision is executed with precision and efficiency.

The Architect -v- The Landscape Architect In simple terms, one designs the building, the other makes it look pretty in its setting. Of course, it’s much more complex than that. Much much more! Architects spend years being educated, becoming qualified, gaining experience under more seasoned hands, constantly learning and engaging with a variety of clients, collaborators, critics and consultants. On the other hand, Landscape Architects spend years being educated, becoming qualified, gaining experience under more seasoned hands, constantly learning and engaging with a variety of clients, collaborators, critics and consultants. But….you wouldn’t expect a Landscape Architect to design a high rise building, hospital, hotel, volume residential scheme or office block. Architects have a very specific set of skills (we bet you’re picturing Liam Neeson reading that bit), as do Landscape Architects. Different skills though. Different knowledge. Each invaluable to your project and both striving for you to achieve your objectives. To expect an Architect to produce a well designed, well thought out landscape proposals is perhaps akin to asking a plumber to sort your electrics out. They really shouldn’t try as the results could end up being quite disastrous. Landscape architects are trained to look beyond the scope of the site, to integrate the development into the wider landscape, to link functionality, practicality, sustainability and beauty. Hang on though, isn’t that what Architects do as well? The lines shouldn’t be blurred. In bringing sites forward, it’s important to recognise the skillsets of different, but heavily allied disciplines and not put pressure on one or the other to step outside their working arena. It’ll only slow things down, be counterproductive and in the long run potentially more costly. Appoint a Landscape Architect for your external spaces. They’ll keep you right. #landscapearchitecture #architecture #landscapearchitect

Chartered Landscape Architect | Founder of Awscape Ltd Creating A World Where Everyone Can Breathe | LI AdCo Member | Volunteer Cub Leader | Speaker | Changemaker | 4 Day Week Employer
As a landscape architect myself, to all my fellow landscape architects out there, what I want to know is why did you become one? What makes you want to get up in the morning and do your job as a landscape architect? Do you still want to get up in the morning and do your job? I am intrigued more than anything. A lot of landscape architects marched for nature at the weekend and I found it amazing. I couldn't be there but that doesn't mean I didn't support it. Our profession is always met with awe when I tell people my job, but then I also am asked to design their garden straight after, or can you lay a few slabs for me? Now I don't actually mind this at all. This has information. They know that landscape architecture means professional designer and I also know that many of us including Awscape Ltd design gardens. But why is it still seen by so many as only that? However, what I want to know is, what are you doing to change this perception that that is all we do? What can we do as a collective of landscape architects to make people understand the value we have to nature on a huge national if not global scale? This isn't a Landscape Institute thing, this is a landscape architect thing, a you thing, a me thing. A together thing? We have knowledge beyond so many on this subject area. Are we sharing this knowledge and educating those around us about it, even fellow Landscape architects? Everyone you meet do you explain what you do? The building sector often know what we do, but what about children, adults in a different profession, the geographer or biologist at uni, the lad down the road, our neighbour...parliament. This is part of our role, right? Or do you see it as that? I am curious. Does a doctor hold back when someone is dying because it's only his job and he is on holiday? 🤔 I have an Advisory Council meeting tomorrow and I am curious to know what it means to you to be a landscape architect in this world and how do you want to be supported to raise the profile of landscape architects. Do you feel you can turn to other landscape practices for their support? The LI can only do so much. This is up to us too. Let me know your thoughts on this. Even if it is a PM. This is not a blame post this is a what can we do post.

Chartered Landscape Architect | Landscape strategies/ masterplans/ plans | Discharge of landscape conditions |
How do I know what a ‘good landscape architect’ is? To determine if a landscape architect is good, consider the following factors: Qualifications and Credentials: Look for a landscape architect who is chartered and has the appropriate qualifications and credentials. Check if they have completed a recognised landscape architecture programme, are registered with the Landscape Institute, and have relevant certifications. Portfolio and Experience: Review the landscape architect's portfolio to assess the quality and diversity of their previous work. Look for projects that align with your style and requirements. Consider their experience in handling similar projects, including the scale, complexity, and specific design elements. Client Testimonials and References: Seek feedback from previous clients of the landscape architect. Read testimonials or ask for references to get insights into their professionalism, communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, and overall satisfaction with the design process and outcome. Design Approach and Style: Consider the landscape architect's design approach and style. Look for a designer whose style resonates with your preferences and vision. A good landscape architect should be able to adapt their design to suit the specific needs and desires of their clients. Communication and Collaboration: Assess the landscape architect's communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively. They should be attentive listeners, able to understand your needs, and translate them into a cohesive design. Good communication ensures that your ideas are incorporated into the project and that you are regularly updated on progress. Sustainable Design Practices: Consider a landscape architect's commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly design practices. A good landscape architect should have knowledge of sustainable design principles and incorporate them into their projects, such as water-efficient landscaping, use of native plants, and eco-friendly materials. Professionalism and Ethics: Evaluate the landscape architect's professionalism, integrity, and ethical standards. They should conduct themselves in a trustworthy manner, adhere to professional codes of conduct, and prioritise the best interests of their clients unless they are carrying out work which requires them to be impartial, such as Landscape and Visual Impact assessments (LVIAs). Compatibility and Trust: Lastly, trust your instincts and consider your rapport with the landscape architect. A good landscape architect should be someone you feel comfortable working with, who understands your vision, and who you can trust to deliver a successful design. By considering these factors, you can assess the qualities and capabilities of a landscape architect and make an informed decision when choosing the right professional for your project. #AllChangeConsulting #ProjectEnhancement #LandscapeDesign #landscapearchitect #developmentprojects

What my friends think I do vs. what I actually do (ARCHITECTURE EDITION) Friends think that I… - Draw pretty buildings all day 🏛️ - Design my dream house on the side 🏡 - Pick out fancy furniture and color schemes 🛋️ I actually… - Juggle blueprints, regulations, and caffeine to meet impossible deadlines ☕📐 - Manage clients expectations and their “rough biro sketches” to ensure projects stay within scope, budget, and timeline 📅 - Pop an imaginary champagne bottle when everything passes the inspections first time 🍾 - Ensure structures are safe, functional, and meet all legal codes (and convince clients that structural integrity is more important than "cosy vibes") 😬 - Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and city planners to bring projects to life 🏗️ #Architecture #ArchitectLife
