The City of Huber Heights Police Division has received national attention for these two officers who did a good deed (https://lnkd.in/g5xPan-v). We are very proud of hometown Officers Drew Olinger and Joe Sanchez, who made a 4-year old boy's birthday really special after his gifts were stolen. https://lnkd.in/e2BXeZPK

COPS DON'T WANT TO KILL We hear so much about the subjects from police shootings, and the need for more police 'accountability'. But we don't hear about the pain caused to police officers, and their families, after they are forced to respond to lethal force situations by the suspects dangerous and violent actions. We need to remember, that this is for the ones who are fortunate to have even survived the lethal force situation. Here is Chad Robichaux's story about his officer involved shooting: 1) Dangerous Situation: A subject creates a violent and dangerous situation placing innocent people at risk of dying. A male with a gun at a domestic violence call, and a family in need of safety. 2) Resistance To Shooting: Chad felt an overwhelming resistance to using lethal force. Like many officers, it was unexpected, as the suspect pointed a gun directly at him. In the book Shots Fired, Chad describes that before the shooting, he would've said "blast him" if told about this situation. But then he delayed shooting and tried to grab the gun, putting his life in greater danger. That is powerful resistance to using lehtal force is a common response for so many officers. 3) Emotional Pain: Chad felt a deep emotional pain for being forced to shoot someone. In the book, Chad writes that he felt compassion for this man, who was pointing a gun at him. 4) Media Bias: Despite no charges against Chad, the media headline from his shooting was: 'Cold-Blooded Murder'. This is so disrespectful to someone who just risked his life, and his mental health, to keep his community safe. 5) Lack of Understanding: Not only did the media not understand, but even his own wife struggled with how to understand and support Chad. He describes severe emotional pain, leading to thoughts of suicide. Here's why this matters: This wasn't a murder in need of 'accountability'. This was a man who was forced to shoot a man to keep the community safe. This came after Chad risked his own life, to keep that man's own family safe. He was then vilified in the media, and his life fell apart for years. I know many officers who have suffered severe distress after a police shooting, and many of this officers are actually the victim to someone else's suicide by cop attempt. Many have described the investigation, and (unwarranted) criminal charges as WORSE than surviving their lethal force situation. That's the type of situation, and person, that is regularly being vilified in the media as a murderer after a police shooting. They aren't a nameless faceless police uniform. They're a good person, just like Chad. The public needs to understand the difference between a non-culpable homicide and a murder. Most importantly, we need to stop treating cops like criminals, when we are asking them to keep us safe from dangerous situations.

Gun violence disproportionately impacts Black Americans and is growing at a rate that far exceeds gun violence impacting white people in the US. This Black History Month, I was able to publish this analysis examining the changes in gun violence impacting Black Americans over the past five years and the ways in which systemic racism, combined with easy access to firearms perpetuates high levels of gun violence. Learn more about the analysis here: https://lnkd.in/ewYTqEhB
Despite making up just 14% of the U.S. population, Black Americans account for 60% of firearm homicides each year. This is just one jarring finding that our research team uncovered when studying the disproportionate impacts of gun violence on Black Americans. Honoring Black history means taking action to save Black lives. It means addressing systemic racism and easy access to firearms which drives gun violence.
