My first remote job was in 1998. When I started, I had a total of 2 years commercial experience: 15 months with COBOL/DB2 and 9 months of C++. None of this experience was explicitly useful. In this job, I learned a new database, new UI designer and new language. These were all custom-built modules of a proprietary development tool called ZIM. Docs were available online. One common objection to remote work for juniors, is that they need an office environment to learn how to do things. I had no access to this. However, a senior developer was available by email or phone, when needed. So… Objections to juniors doing remote work: fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) or genuine concerns? My experience seems to suggest the former.

Now, recently I had a talk with Aman Mehra in the recruitment area. He was interesting to talk with. He asked me a question, very few had asked prior and that was "What are you doing nowadays?". What follows is my answer: Back when I employed by Keywords Studios Montreal Branch, at the time Covid hit Canada, I was essentially unemployed for around 3 months as Companies had to convince clients that testing their product can be done remotely. It's thanks to the project leads and managers that we then got some work. During that 3 month interval, I uninstalled Windows from my main system and installed Arch Linux. It took me a weekend to do so. Now, I am currently trying to do the same with a Debian Flavor distro named AntiX. Now, why is it a big thing. It's because: 1. At the time, I had only Wireless (Wifi) connection to the internet. 2. Arch Linux gives you a console and a few utilities to begin with. Comparing that with other distros which run out of the box in which you just have to point-and-click and the job is done, Arch has nothing of this sort. So, I used my mobile as a hotspot to connect to the internet, then, downloaded various drivers, made configuration files leading up to the GUI which was composed of Sawfish as the Window Manager, Picom as the Compositing Manager, Tint2 for the Tray / Panel and LightDM as the Display Manager. Now, I am doing all of this with Debian which has different packages (softwares) and different configs. So far, I have been mildly successful as I got the traditional GUI startup, i.e, using "startx" so there is no need for a Display Manager, BerryWM as the Window Manager and Polybar as the tray.
