In order to preserve the blue paint, the aircraft is being stored until the new museum hangar is constructed and then it will be moved inside. "Fold 'em up Friday!" Immediately after trapping onboard an aircraft carrier, it's imperative that the wings get folded on all aircraft as they are taxiing out of the landing zone. This is done for space saving and safety. This is E-2C Hawkeye BuNo 160703 of VAW-125 "Tigertails" (AA-603) in 1996 onboard CVN-65 under control of the yellow shirt Fly 2 director taxiing out of the way so the next aircraft could land. This aircraft is no longer in service, stricken off charge and assumed scrapped. The Hawkeye's main mission is early airborne early warning to protect the carrier and battle group. There have been a total of 313 manufactured in all variants. #grumman #e2chawkeye #usnavy #flynavy #navalaviation #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #aviationgeeks #avgeek #avgeeks #avnerd #aviationlovers #aviationhistory #aviationphoto #aviationphotography #aviationphotos #airplane #airplanes #aircraft #airplanephotos #aircraftcarrier #ussenterprise Friends of Naval Aviation, Inc. #hummer

The only Curtiss XF15C-1 "Stingeree" survivor of the three prototypes built. Photo from 6 years ago, after we reassembled the aircraft after relocating it to Hickory from Rhode Island. First one crashed, second was scrapped, and this went into storage. Built in 1945, it was the Curtiss proposal for "mixed propulsion" capabilities. A big Pratt and Whitney radial engine in the front and an Allis Chalmers jet engine in the back powered this prototype. With jet power coming online, it was already obsolete, so the project went no further. We look forward to a cosmetic restoration and then moving this historically significant aircraft inside the new HAM hangar being built. The aircraft is on loan to HAM from the National Naval Aviation Museum. More history later this month on this plane as we celebrate the first flight anniversary. #curtissxf15c1stingeree #prototype #usnavy #flynavy #navalaviation #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #aviationphotos #aviationphoto #airplane #airplanes #aircraft #jetengine #radialengine #hickorync #nonprofitorganization Friends of Naval Aviation, Inc.

#OTD, 10/11/1968, US Navy F-111B BuNo 151974 crashed at Pt Mugu California, ending the F-111B program completely. The aircraft was designed to be a carrier based long range interceptor replacing the F-4 Phantom. It first flew in 1965 and went through three years of testing and trials however it was plagued by excessive weight and being underpowered, as well as not achieving goals set forth by the USN such as dog-fighting capabilities. As the negative results continued to pile up, Congress pulled funding for the project, but Grumman had a back up plan, Model 303, which became the F-14 Tomcat! Of the seven F-111B aircraft built, four crashed, two were scrapped, and one is at NAWS China Lake, CA. The de Havilland Sea Vixen, a twin-seat, twin-engined fleet air defence fighter, took a major step forward on September 26, 1951, when its initial prototype, serial number WG 106, completed construction at Hatfield and conducted its maiden flight piloted by John Cunningham. This milestone marked the beginning of the Sea Vixen's development journey. Early flight tests of the Sea Vixen prototype revealed that the aircraft's performance exceeded expectations. By the following year, in 1952, the prototype was regularly achieving supersonic speeds during test flights, demonstrating the design's impressive capabilities. This was a significant achievement for a carrier-based interceptor of that era. The Sea Vixen went on to serve with distinction in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm from 1959 to 1972. Its unique "fork-tailed" design and powerful Avon turbojet engines made it a formidable presence on the decks of British aircraft carriers. The Sea Vixen's speed, agility, and advanced radar systems allowed it to effectively intercept and engage enemy aircraft, ensuring the protection of the fleet. The successful maiden flight and subsequent supersonic test achievements of the Sea Vixen prototype on September 26, 1951, laid the foundation for the aircraft's successful operational career and cemented its place in the annals of British naval aviation history. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce #pilots #british

The Bristol Type 188, also known as the "Flaming Pencil" due to its distinctive shape, was a supersonic research aircraft designed and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the United Kingdom. It was developed in the early 1960s as part of a research program to investigate the challenges of sustained supersonic flight. The Type 188 was a small, single-seat aircraft with a long, slender fuselage and delta wings. It was powered by four de Havilland Gyron Junior turbojet engines, which gave it a maximum speed of Mach 2.2 (over 2,500 kilometers per hour). Despite its successful flight test program, the Type 188 was never used in production. The British government decided to focus its resources on the development of the Anglo-French Concorde supersonic airliner, and the Type 188 program was cancelled in 1964. The only surviving example of the Type 188 is on display at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford in the United Kingdom. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #uk #unitedkingdom

Going the way of the ironclads? Let's throw the cat amongst the pigeons and address the elephant in the room (just to chronically mix metaphors)! As France looks to up their game and join the carrier strike group 'club' and the UK sends HMS Queen Elizabeth for propellor repairs, instead of joining a NATO exercise, capital ships risk exposure in various theatres.... Is the time for super carriers past its sell-by date, in the context of evolving threats including air, surface and subsurface drones (including swarm tactics), or are they especially valid and vital as a strategic force multiplier? To know what we were capable of back then and how far we are moving today makes you wonder where will we be in another 60 years.
#LeapYear History📚 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗝𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗨.𝗦. WASHINGTON—(Feb. 29, 1964) President Johnson disclosed Saturday the secret five-year development of an experimental jet aircraft whose performance “far exceeds that of any other aircraft in the world today.” Several of the craft, designated A-11, have been “tested in sustained flight” at speeds greater than 2,000 m.p.h. and at heights over 70,000 ft., he said. The craft has been made possible “by major advances in aircraft technology of great significance to both military and commercial application,” Mr. Johnson told a press conference.
