The concept of folding wings, folding main rotor etc originated with the necessity of room in case of naval fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircrafts and even unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that operate from the limited deck space. There was a need of space and localization on the hangar and flight decks. The folding mechanisms have been focused to military and navy aircrafts in order to create room for large number of aircrafts. But with the expansion of the aircraft industry and advent of more passengers & advanced aircrafts, the commercial airliners are also facing the need of space on airports. ✈️

The Grumman "Sto-Wing" was one of the most innovative advancements in WWII naval aviation. By integrating this technology with the Avenger and F4F Wildcat, it significantly increased carrier aircraft capacity by over 50%. This enhancement allowed for greater operational flexibility and improved mission effectiveness during the war. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce #pilots

This kind of arrangement only works with low wing loads. Not possible to carry the high wing loads of commercial jet airliners. This holds true for a lot of the WW2 carrier aircraft folding wing configurations. 777X folding wingtip is a significant advance in folding wing technology.

The Curtiss XF14C was an American naval fighter aircraft developed by Curtiss-Wright in the early 1940s. Unfortunately, the project was canceled before the aircraft could enter full production. Despite its cancellation, the Curtiss XF14C served as a stepping stone in the development of high-performance naval fighter aircraft. Its design concepts and technologies were later incorporated into other successful aircraft of the era. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry

#OTD, 10/11/1968, US Navy F-111B BuNo 151974 crashed at Pt Mugu California, ending the F-111B program completely. The aircraft was designed to be a carrier based long range interceptor replacing the F-4 Phantom. It first flew in 1965 and went through three years of testing and trials however it was plagued by excessive weight and being underpowered, as well as not achieving goals set forth by the USN such as dog-fighting capabilities. As the negative results continued to pile up, Congress pulled funding for the project, but Grumman had a back up plan, Model 303, which became the F-14 Tomcat! Of the seven F-111B aircraft built, four crashed, two were scrapped, and one is at NAWS China Lake, CA. The A-4 Skyhawk, a legendary aircraft, was in production for 22 years, from October 1, 1956 to February 26, 1979. During this time, a total of 2,960 A-4 Skyhawks were built, making it one of the most widely produced aircraft of its time. The final A-4 Skyhawk, number 2,690, was delivered to the United States Marine Corps. It's fascinating to consider the impact this aircraft had on aviation history and the role it played in shaping the military landscape. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry
