As a former teacher and now an Account Executive at Worldwide Express, I've learned a thing or two about the power of genuine connection. As corny as it sounds, I learned a lot of that growing up from my father. Story time.... Picture this: A hot summer day at ARNOLDS PARK AMUSEMENT PARK. Myself, my husband, our 3 kiddos and my parents. Ride after ride, game after game we always had to go find my dad after! We realized he was always off talking to someone. Well, we found out that while everyone else was riding rollercoasters and playing games, my dad was busy talking to every single staff member. I do mean EVERY. SINGLE. STAFF MEMBER. By the time we left, he had a bunch of new connections and knew each person's story by heart. To this day he could probably tell you their names and all about their life back in their home countries. Side note.. my dad is NOT a salesman. He just genuinely loves hearing people stories. His ability to effortlessly connect with others left a lasting impression on me. I've always believed in building meaningful connections, and my dad showed me that businesses, receptionists, shippers, dock workers... we're all just humans at the end of the day. Deep down, we all crave connection and understanding. So, when it comes to cold calling in logistics, I've made it my mission to lead with empathy. Understanding the concerns and needs of the person on the other end of the line isn't just about making a sale – it's about building a relationship. Be a person first, a salesperson second. 👍Right Or wrong?❤️ I recently received a call from a customer at my former workplace, who was experiencing issues with her product. Despite no longer being with the company, I listened attentively to her concerns, validated her experience, and offered a temporary solution over the phone. I stayed on the line to ensure the solution worked, and when it did, she expressed sincere gratitude. I explained that while my assistance was temporary, she would need to contact the company for a permanent fix. She was surprised to learn I had left but thanked me for my help. I reassured her that as a customer service representative, my commitment to helping others remains unchanged. I promptly contacted my former office, providing them with her details and the nature of her complaint for follow-up. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the importance of empathy and proactive customer service, even beyond the confines of a specific role. I look forward to continuing to support customers in any way I can, no matter where my career takes me. I use a few tricks to stay organized at work. We all get so many phone numbers during our professional careers. In my case, I have more than 3500 contact numbers in my contact list. After some time, it's hard to remember who's who. We meet customers, team members, and get referrals. One trick is how I save phone numbers. Customer Support and Contact Center professionals - I want to share a cautionary tale about my experience with Paramount, the CS staffing and recruiting company. You decide how to interact with them should they reach out to you. A rep from Paramount reached out to me stating he wanted to connect because of our shared interest in customer support. My acceptance was immediately followed by the standard "let's have a call to discuss...". I was curious so I accepted. A second rep joined the call unexpectedly with the explanation that "Josh" was new so "Kory" was tagging along. Hmmm, but I went forward. Kory then did all of the talking about how they are always interested in connecting with CS-minded people because that is their placement field. They also talked up how they want to help me with my job search and that they would be expanding into senior management CS roles at some point. They would be active supporters for whatever I needed and said I could send my resume for more exposure at my discretion (of course). I fell for it and now regret it. Why?? I've reached out to "Kory" for support and received nothing back. After a few weeks of nothing, I reached out to "Josh" for explanation of the intent of our call and get nothing back. He checked my profile so I know he saw my message. I messaged again stating I wanted him to have the chance to explain what is going on before I posted something on LI. I got nothing back so I am posting. You decide.
