Hello everyone! I'm writing this on behalf of my 4th-year Capstone project at Carleton University: Autonomous Spacecraft Robotics (DOT) under Professor Steve Ulrich. This upcoming Tuesday, November 28th, is Carleton's Giving Tuesday event through FutureFunder.ca. All donations made between midnight and 11:59pm on Tuesday will be matched by Carleton. This is an excellent opportunity for my Capstone to secure additional funding that we can use to acquire tools, technology and resources to further our research. The goal of the DOT Capstone project is to develop state-of-the-art computer vision, path planning, and feedback control techniques that can be implemented to improve autonomous robotic functionality in space. Specifically, this project focuses on autonomous rendezvous and docking maneuvers. Through parallel development of the aforementioned techniques and experimental application on the Spacecraft Proximity Operations Testbed (SPOT), we aim to successfully carry out an experiment that meets the following criteria: 1. A chaser spacecraft successfully rendezvous and docks with a target 2. The target is spinning and collaborative (the chaser is receiving visual data from the target) 3. The chaser avoids a passive obstacle in order to successfully rendezvous and dock with the target Beyond the academic realm, our project has immense potential to make a positive impact on the satellite industry. There are three main applications that Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking can be used for: 1. Space debris removal 2. On-orbit servicing 3. In-space assembly Our project represents the culmination of years of hard work and research on the part of Professor Ulrich and all of the graduate and undergraduate students who have worked in the Spacecraft Robotics and Control Laboratory at Carleton. This is the first year of the Autonomous Spacecraft Robotics Capstone project, which puts the students involved in a unique position to set the precedent for the success of this project in the years to come.
