Today I co-chaired the regions transport forum (some outline details on what this covered are detailed below). One aspect raised within this meeting could do with wide support however from anyone in the region. Can you help?❓ The reopening of DSA airport with a green aviation focus is getting closer. Despite these hard fought gains a key risk remains. The airspace above DSA is threatened from potential CAA reallocation removing the regions airspace potential for the region. This 'if' done would cause multi-year delays to reopening minimising the economic impacts for the region. To prevent this and bring this back sooner we need individuals to join all local MPs and >10,000 others already to put greater pressure on CAA to keep this airspace open for the region. The future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport looks a little rosier today after the local authority signed a 125 year lease on the airport site. The airport closed in October 2022, with the withdrawal of Wizz Air being the final straw after two years of pandemic disruption. However, many observers believed that Peel Group, owners of the site, were not unhappy at its closure. Due to improved road links to the M1, funded by the local authority, the land had great potential as a warehouse and distribution centre. A tender process to appoint a new operator and investor is already underway, and the Mayor of Doncaster said today that she is confident of signing a deal later in the spring. The project currently has the working title of 'South Yorkshire Airport City' although this may not end up being the new trading name. Assuming that the airport can remain debt free, there is potential to lure back low cost carriers with low landing fees. Given that Leeds Bradford and East Midlands are not the easiest airports to access, Doncaster Sheffield - on paper - should be successful. As we've seen with London Southend, however, you can have a brand new terminal, your own railway station and zero queues and still not make it work. Passengers from the southeast #Irish port of #Rosslare could be forced to change trains on the way to #Dublin. Growing traffic from the port and enhancements to the metro service around the Irish capital could leave through services struggling for train paths. The return of the Great British Rail Sale is welcome news for cash-strapped travellers. And thanks to independent retailers, passengers can save even more by using split ticketing Apps and websites, which can find the cheapest combination of rail sale fares for any journey, hassle-free. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when the wider rail industry works in partnership with retailers. But with more rail tickets being sold by independent retailers than by the rest of the industry put together, building on that partnership is the easiest way to get rail’s revenues back on track. Making all ticket promotions available to all retailers is a good starting point, but on a day-to-day basis, there are plenty of ways to kick-start passenger growth with more sophisticated use of existing information, such as reservations data. As private companies - free from the restrictions of government contracts but also and free from the comfort of government subsidies – only independent retailers have the real incentive to develop solutions to drive growth. The opportunities are there, and we’re excited at the prospect of working ever more closely with Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT), Rail Delivery Group and Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom dft to help realise that huge potential.
