I’ve always wondered what goes on in trainee programs especially graduate trainee programs. That was until I recently served as an assessor in a 10-day trainee program. Who is an assessor? An assessor is a person who evaluates or assesses a person, situation or property, in this context, a trainee program. My role during the trainee program was essentially to: • Evaluate participant learning • Provide feedback on how the training can be improved and enhanced • Identify skill gaps and areas that require additional training and development • Conduct assessment and evaluate the results Trainee programs are essential for companies recruiting new staff, as they offer numerous benefits for both the organizations and the trainees. To the organizations: • They shape trainees to align with the company values, • Improve productivity in trainees • Enhance the company’s brand • Increase employee retention To the trainees: • They acquire industry or company specific skills • They get guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals • They gain a competitive advantage • They get the practical experience by applying theoretical knowledge As an assessor, I work with both the organization and the trainees by providing feedback and evaluations, monitoring the program’s effectiveness and ensuring continuous improvement of the program. Construction Trainee, Joe, has spoken to us about his experience on the Traineeship and what his plans are for the future 👇 "I went to sixth form before the traineeship, I did design technology, business, and psychology. I went to sixth form to see my friends but I never really wanted to go to university, I wanted to do more hands-on work so construction kind of suits that. After the traineeship I hope to gain an apprenticeship, and hopefully open my own business later on in life. I have started the last trade, joinery. I’ve tried all the other trades; I want to go through with joinery. It’s been good, along with teaching they let you get on and learn from your mistakes, which is how I learn because it's more memorable. It’s been good. The benefits of doing the traineeship are you learn the basic skills before going out on site, so you find out how to use these skills sooner. The skills I have learned from this traineeship are bricklaying in general, like plumb gauge level, and in roofing, how to put up slats on roofs and stuff like that. My favourite part of this traineeship is the fact that you are allowed to get on with what you’re doing, that suits me. Training people is tougher than I remembered. At Griffin Recruitment, we've recently welcomed some new starters, and it’s been an eye-opening experience. What seems second nature to me, after years in the industry, can sometimes lead to blank stares when I explain it to someone new. It’s a humbling reminder that just because something feels easy now doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. It’s not their challenge—it’s mine. The onus is on me to guide them and take the time to train them properly. This experience has made one thing clear: when I’m speaking with clients, especially about hiring Graduate or Trainee Consultants, I’m going to place a real emphasis on the importance of a solid training programme. As an Apprentice Site Manager with B+K and currently pursuing a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, Ellie’s journey began with a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning at Cirencester College. For Ellie, choosing a T-Level was a no-brainer, especially as it provided the perfect balance of practical and classroom learning. Here’s why Ellie’s story is a perfect example of the benefits T-Levels can offer: ➡️ Hands-on experience Ellie loved the work placement opportunities that allowed her to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Her time on site helped her gain practical skills like using surveying equipment and attending meetings, essential experience for her role as an apprentice site manager. ➡️ Industry-specific knowledge T-Levels are designed to provide a deep dive into industry sectors. Ellie’s course covered everything from material properties and surveying to technical drawing. It gave her a strong foundation in the construction industry and introduced her to different career paths, helping her find her passion. ➡️ Personal growth and confidence As a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Ellie faced challenges but has been met with strong support from her colleagues at every site. It was a real pleasure to have taken on a work experience student last week. This young person is already making headway, having come 3rd in the CitiZen national competition held by the Institute of Civil Engineers. The world of work must seem so strange for these young people… I remember how awkward I felt in my first job!
