Elevating the urgency of modern slavery to the status of the climate crisis. Did you know that this week is #AntiSlaveryWeek? Yesterday I attended the ‘Built Envrionment Against Slavery conference by Supply Chain Sustainability School (UK) as Vistry Group’s rep on the industry working group of the same name. Yesterday was equal parts energising, harrowing, engaging and sorrowful. We heard the latest stats and figures, upcoming risks and stagnant progress, and ended with an open and honest dialogue with a victim of labour exploitation in the UK construction sector. Efie’s story was profound and resonated on a human level - something I’ve come to realise our work strangely is sometimes absent of. She urged us and the businesses we work for to take responsibility for the very real human harm our sector are knowingly or not benefiting from. Reminder that we are talking about human lives, which cannot be ‘priced’ when discussing the ‘business case’ of tackling this human crisis. I fervently resonate with the notion of centralising precious and priceless human lives in the pursuit of decarbonising. In our sector, building ‘sustainable homes’ should also ensure they are built safely and with materials that do not exploit people and children. Leaving no one behind in the fight against climate change. A Just Transition.

Today, 18th October, marks Anti-Slavery Day - a day dedicated to reminding us that there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in human history. 17,000 people were identified in 2023 as potential victims of modern slavery in UK and only 51% of them were adults. According to slavery experts, this is just a tip of the iceberg and number of modern slaves in UK is much higher – it is estimated to be around 130,000. The construction industry in the UK is one of the three worst sectors for modern slavery abuse due to widespread use of sub-contracted labour, high turnover of workers and complex supply chains. That’s why Tier 1 construction companies partnered this year with anti-slavery charity Unseen UK and step up efforts to tackle this problem by releasing a short film that aims to help spot potential victims on construction sites. #construction #modernslavery #antislavery #antislaveryday #forcedlabour

Wayne Mason, an IUEC Local 21 retiree, shared with us the harrowing experience that changed his life forever. Early in his career, distracted for just a moment, Wayne fell three stories. 🛠️Safety in the elevator industry has changed a lot since 1980. IUEC-affiliated companies prioritize the safety and well-being of mechanics and apprentices on the jobsite, and ensure that all projects are approached with maximum precaution. Wayne's story still serves as a powerful reminder: there's no room for distractions. Safety first, always. This dedication to safety not only protects elevator constructors, but also ensures reliability and peace of mind for the riding public, building contractors, and owners alike.
