The U.S. Department of Justice released a report on its critical incident review of the law enforcement response to the tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the review shortly after the tragedy on May 24, 2022, in which 19 children and two teachers died at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The report provides a thorough description of the critical incident review that has taken place over the past 20 months. The report is intended to provide the most comprehensive assessment available of the law enforcement response to the horrific incident on May 24, 2022, as well as the emergency medical response, communications, and trauma services in the wake of the tragedy. It begins with a minute-by-minute timeline reconstructing key events before, during, and immediately following the shooting. The report addresses many previously unanswered questions, builds on the existing knowledge base for responding to incidents of mass violence, and identifies generally accepted practices for effective law enforcement responses. In doing so, this report endeavors to honor the victims and survivors of this tragedy, as well as offer recommendations to improve future responses in other communities. https://lnkd.in/g_qvUrkp #AAR #review #response #lessons #recommendations #schoolshooting #schoolsafety #activeshooter #MCI #masscasualty #AVI #report #lawenforcement #police #emergency #medicalresponse #communications #highthreat #threat #threats #DOJ

Monroe County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Todd Baxter and a wide variety of #community leaders are "consensus-building" across #NewYork state to prompt lawmakers to tweak #criminaljustice reforms instituted since 2018. The Consortium for Safe Communities (CSC) ourconsortiumny.com is a unique collective started in #RochesterNY, drawing from business, government, law enforcement, education, community activists, religion, private citizens, and others. CSC's current effort is focused on bail reform with three primary objectives: establishing a dangerousness standard, adding a repeat offender option, and writing a "clean law" that is easily understood. Currently, New York state is the only jurisdiction in the country that doesn't allow judges to hold lawbreakers if they pose a threat to the community. Advocating for crime victims, the CSC also opposes proposed "elder parole" legislation that would allow convicted prisoners, regardless of the crime, to be eligible for parole with 15 years of their sentence served by age 55 or older and potentially provide them with a pension if released. The CSC maintains such a program re-victimizes those affected by crime. Sheriff Baxter is quick to point out that discussions within the founding Monroe County chapter of the CSC are spirited, with members often in disagreement but arriving at goals that promote #publicsafety. The Sheriff continues to promote the CSC concept across the state. #lawenforcement #police #sheriff #crime #victimsrights

How can leaders improve relations and communication between law enforcement and communities, especially in the aftermath of incidents involving the use of deadly force? The Divided Community Project, the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and the USDOJ Community Relations Service developed a comprehensive guide providing law enforcement agencies with tools for building trust, fostering dialogue, and improving relations and communication between law enforcement and communities. This guidance for law enforcement agencies at all levels—Federal, State, Tribal, local, and territorial—responds to President Biden’s May 25, 2022 Executive Order 14074 on Advancing Effective, Accountable Policing and Criminal Justice Practices to Enhance Public Trust and Public Safety in response to George Floyd’s death.
