Flashback Friday Project Navigator, Ltd. (PNL) is the Project Coordinator for the Tex Tin Superfund Site in Texas City, Texas, a 140-acre former tin and copper smelter. Tex Tin hosted the only tin smelter operating in the US during WWII. PNL managed the RD/RA, which included demolition of dilapidated buildings, lab pack, treatment of a 6-acre pond with 2 pH, 25 acres of pond closure, cap and cover 80 acres of impacted soils, construction of a radioactive material landfill, installation of a 50-foot deep, 3000-foot-long slurry wall, construction of 3 RCRA-equivalent landfills, and installation of a phytoremediation system for hydraulic control. Sale of the site was concluded in 2005 to developers after receiving an EPA “Ready for Reuse” Determination. The site was redeveloped as a petroleum product terminal and as a support facility for the Texas City refinery complex. PNL continues to manage the project, coordinating O&M activities on behalf of the site settling parties. To ensure compliance with the site standards and to maintain the integrity of the remedy, PNL has provided oversight for subsequent site infrastructure work that require coordination with the PRP group, EPA, the site owners and the companies performing the work. ASCO Group wins contract to manage quay at Teesside freeport Aberdeen’s ASCO Group has won a three-year deal to operate a new heavy lift quay at the Teesside Freeport. The logistics firm will manage the Teesworks £114m south bank heavy lift quay creating 65 jobs in the North East of England. The 450-metre quayside development was chosen to serve South Korean firm SeAH Wind Ltd’s £450m manufacturing facility, allowing monopiles to be shipped out to #offshore #wind farms in the North Sea. Teesworks said it expects the monopile factory will be operational in 2026. Teesworks and the freeport Teesworks is a private/public partnership spearheading the development of a 4,500 acre brownfield site which includes the former Redcar #steelworks. It is a major part of the Teesside Freeport, the largest UK freeport, which also includes Teesport, the Port of Middlesbrough, the Port of Hartlepool and Teesside International Airport. The heavy-lift quay was awarded £107m of loan funding in the UK Infrastructure Bank’s first ever investment in 2021. Teesworks is 90% owned by local developers Chris Musgrave of JC Musgrave, and Martin Corney of Northern Land Management and the remaining 10% is owned by the public-sector South Tees Development Corporation (STDC). ASCO Group work scope Work to be offered by ASCO Group will include quayside planning and scheduling, operations coordination, #vessel scheduling, stevedoring and internal distribution services. The Aberdeen firm expects work to begin in the summer this year, with the first vessel expected to berth in September. ASCO Group CEO Mike Pettigrew, said: “The south bank quay is a flagship project for Asco which will propel us along the right track right at the start of 2024, en route to achieving our future goals. “It confirms and reinforces our intention to make significant investment into increasing our footprint in the new energies sector over the coming years. “Winning such a major contract is a testament to the work that we have done over the years where we have delivered world-class logistics services across the #energy industry while contributing to the economic growth of the communities in which we operate.” Garry O'Malley, operations director at Teesworks, said Asco have “a great deal of experience in port and terminal operations both in the UK and globally”. He added: “The award of this contract also marks another milestone for the Teesworks site as it makes the transition to greener #energy. “ASCO Group as the quay operator will provide the operational expertise required to ensure service levels for users of this valuable asset are of the highest standard. This partnership will create up to 65 direct jobs providing more employment opportunities for the area.”

United Utilities has advertised a reservoir works framework to support its construction activities during Asset Management Periods 8 (2025-2030) and 9 (2030-2035). The framework includes a £125M specialist ground improvement lot and an £80M improvements and maintenance lot. Lot 1, valued at £80M, is for reservoir improvements and maintenance. The utility expects to appoint 10 contractors to this lot, who may be required to perform a range of tasks such as confined space works, general civil works, and maintenance/repair of reservoir assets. Lot 2, valued at £125M, is for specialist reservoir ground improvements. United Utilities plans to appoint 8 contractors to this lot, who may be expected to carry out slurry trenches, diaphragm walls, tube-à-manchette and jet grouting, and installation of piles and ground anchors. The deadline for tender submissions is 16 December 2024. United Utilities has already assembled the majority of its £13.7bn AMP8 delivery partners, including C2V, Costain Group PLC, Jacobs, Murphy, Kier Group, Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB, and MWH Treatment. Additional design and build partners have also been announced. The utility is currently seeking contractors to join a £170M ground investigation framework. Its largest upcoming project is the £1.75bn Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme, which will involve replacing sections of the 110km Haweswater Pipeline.
