In San Francisco, while visiting my parents, we discussed about the tech industry, AI, and US employment. Despite the seemingly low unemployment rate of 3.5% reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this figure may not accurately reflect the reality. The criteria for unemployment, requiring active job search within the past four weeks, could mask the number of discouraged individuals temporarily stepping back from the job hunt, which would lower the rate. Also talked about “ghost job postings" discovered in a 2023 survey, revealing a trend where companies advertise positions without genuine intent to hire, strategically building candidate pipelines for future needs. This tactic reveals the leverage companies hold in a job market flooded with applicants, enabling them to negotiate lower wages even in a challenging economic landscape marked by high costs of goods. Later, the conversation moved to the pandemic's effect on the tech industry, accelerating the digital shift and driving demand for cloud services while having remote collaboration. However, there's been a noticeable decrease in tech job postings since 2020, attributed partly to companies retracting after rapid expansion. Interestingly, there has been a shift away from the traditional requirement of a four-year degree for tech roles, with only 46% of jobs requiring such degree in 2024, down from 53% in 2020. This shift has intensified competition for entry-level positions, fueled by alternative education like coding bootcamps. The bootcamp hype has led to a misconception that combining such programs with AI tools can quickly turn anyone into a tech professional. Bootcamps often overlook the development of critical thinking skills inherent in formal education, which can be a significant drawback. As someone who has personally experienced the transition from a social science degree to a bootcamp, I've encountered challenges, particularly in my logical thinking skills. While bootcamps do offer pathways to securing positions in the tech industry, it's essential to recognize that competition for entry-level roles often pits bootcamp graduates against candidates with four-year college degrees who have dedicated years to preparing for careers in the field. Companies are now prioritising "guaranteed wins" over junior developers requiring extensive mentorship. These wins are often secured through trust-building mechanisms such as referrals, recommendation letters, and networking connections forged sometimes during college years. This empathises not only the knowledge you get from a formal education but also in nurturing professional networks critical for professional carrer advancement. From personal experience, I've learned that perseverance can lead to success, even in challenging times. Over the duration of the program, the team tracked the changes from baseline to end-line to understand the program's impact on factors like #employment, salary, and self-esteem. The pilot phase results demonstrate the program's effectiveness in rapidly equipping individuals with the skills necessary to start a career in tech and in supporting greater diversity within the tech sphere.
