Wildfires are the number one natural hazard in Douglas County and can happen in any season. Aerial support is a critical component of Douglas County’s wildfire preparedness toolbox, directed by the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management in close partnership with local fire departments and other agencies. To save lives and protect property, the Trans Aero Helicopter is contracted with Douglas County for exclusive use June 1 until Oct. 31, 2024, with the opportunity to extend exclusive use this year as needed. Having an exclusive use helicopter on contract ensures this tool is ready to be deployed whenever Douglas County needs it. If you attended the Highlands Ranch July 4th Parade, you likely saw the helicopter fly over the parade, which brought attention to this valuable fire fighting resource in our community. PLEASE SEE WILDFIRE UPDATE The wildfire danger level is extreme across the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Over the past 24 hours, we've had approximately five new starts that were caused by lightning. https://lnkd.in/d6WPC8Ei There are several wildfires that are all being managed together under MCX002. This includes MWF047, MWF056, MWF057 (now extinguished), MWF077 and MWF079. MWF056 is classified as being held and the rest are out of control. All of these wildfires were caused by lightning. There are 246 personnel currently working on this complex, including 134 firefighters, 64 incident management team members, support staff, contractors and pilots. We have 19 helicopters and 29 pieces of heavy equipment working this complex. MWF047 is estimated to be 82,709 ha in size. See the most recent map available for MWF047. Currently, MWF047 is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, about 53 km northeast of Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray. We anticipate to see more growth overnight. Most of the fire growth from yesterday was towards the north. Helicopters bucketed on west-southwest portions of the wildfire that showed smoke but the wildfire seemed to respond well to the bucketing. So far, that line continues to hold well, but we are still expecting a challenging firefighting day today. If you see a smoke column or flames in a new area, you can report it to Alberta Wildfire by dialing 310-FIRE. #wildfireseason #WildfireSafety #FortMcMurray #SafelyHome

Does aerial fire fighting work, and is it worth the cost? Well, here's a great piece of historical knowledge to help us answer that question. These are questions I'm continually asked, and the answer is always emphatically yes. Although we are seeing the errors of 100% suppression that's been compounded by the inability to log our forests, it's critical that we realize capacity and maintain the ability to provide rapid initial attack, nation wide. For the #Congressional Wildfire Commission, that means an appropriate standard of cover. United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA) https://lnkd.in/db39vdjj

Wildfire management is in need of modernization. Change comes by providing wildland firefighters with advanced equipment, innovative products, and state-of-the-art services. 21st-century solutions mean better planning tools for fire prevention, mitigation, and preparedness. These advancements not only benefit the firefighters but also safeguard the communities and natural resources they protect from wildfires. WIC’s multifaceted mission includes safeguarding federal discretionary budgets related to wildfires, and ensuring firefighters have access to necessary tools, products, and services each season. Simultaneously, WIC seeks to bridge the communication gap between industry and federal and state customers, fostering a dialogue platform for knowledge exchange and addressing concerns. Crucial to WIC’s approach is its emphasis on collective action. By uniting stakeholders from local communities to federal offices, industry leaders, and frontline firefighters, WIC enhances mutual understanding and collaboration. This unity aims to spur innovation, encourage best practices, and effectively tackle the escalating wildfire challenges. #wildfire #wildlandfirefighter #firefighters #firefighting #wildlandfirefighters #wildlandfirefighting

Helping the world understand wildfire resilience, prevention, and mitigation || Wildfire chemicals || Wildfire prevention technologies || Aerial firefighting & fleet development
The time for action has never been more important for the world. What an important read from United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA). What's written falls in line with many of the discussions and presentations made this week at the Tangent Link Ltd International Aerial Firefighting Conference held in Sacramento. Had our country invested appropriately, even one third of the estimated loss we are about to see in Texas, we may have been set as it relates to having an appropriate aviation response. This isn't the easy button, however its a start. Why is this important? The Congressional Wildfire Commission will be meeting next week in Washington DC to present, discuss, and hand off responsibility for the Commission's recommendations and findings. It will be important for Federal and State Legislators who sit on a wildfire caucus to engage. For the public, and those politicians wanting to make a difference, the opportunity is now. I can think of no one better to speak about this in a political light than Tim Sheehy. AerialFire Magazine https://lnkd.in/g_Yx9Pad
