Hospitality specialist leading a team that gives you direct, actionable insight for meaningful change
Let’s pause for thought on Pepper Lunch… Those of us in Asia might be a bit more familiar with a brand born in Japan with stores across the region. The reason I’ve been mentioning them more frequently is not just because Troy Hooper is an all star CEO leading their North American business but Pepper Lunch is hitting the right notes on both consumer and operator levels 🎯 Bullseye on consumer demand for freshness - cooking at your table is as fresh as it gets 🎯 oomph on consumer demands for customisation hits the spot ✅ Simple operations with a combination of proprietary technology and low skill requirements ✅ Kit format elements to ensure menu execution is repeatable with labor challenges The North American leadership team have injected high levels of energy and positivity into the business along with their depth of expertise. The market is tough but a combination of consumer centricity on experience and operator simplicity on execution is without doubt the common denominator of those winning right now
CEO who values the perspective of all who are willing to unite to exceed expectations. Driven to bring value every day.
#4?!? WHAAAT?!?! I have truly never been more shocked in my entire life! Pepper Lunch Restaurants has been not only named a Fast Casual Top 100, but was ranked by a committee of trade press, industry vendors, and brand executives as #4 among the 2024 class! 15 months ago almost no one in the industry had heard of our incredible brand of 30 years with 516 (463 then) locations in 15 countries. They certainly didn’t know we had been open in North America for 6 years with 7 stores. But today the industry certainly has said they see us, they are paying attention to what we are doing, and more importantly how we are doing it! This is acknowledgement that our teams insanely hard work is being noticed! That how is more important than how many! Congratulations to the entire global team for being the best, the most passionate, and the most consistent brand group I know! Thank you to the committee, this incredible community of leaders, and to our team who deserve this recognition for their hard work, dedication, and passion for the mission they bring everyday! Congratulations to so many of our friends who deservingly made the list and everyone who plays a part in making this community so amazing! Quick Service Restaurant Recruiter/President of I Consult-An Organic Business Development Consultant Group Here To Enhance Your Footprint.
Calling all QSR Operators!!!!- Reach out to Diamond Select Staffing we will assist by finding you great talent!! Feel free to DM to get started. Check out our website: https://lnkd.in/emFDhNm7 Staffing Shortages Will Stick Around- great read from QSR magazine Providing 15.5 million jobs representing 10 percent of the total U.S. workforce, the restaurant industry returned to pre-pandemic staffing levels last year and regained its status as the country’s second-largest private sector employer. Despite that growth, staffing remains an uphill battle for the industry. Many operators say they’re understaffed. Overall, 45 percent say their restaurant doesn’t have enough employees to support existing customer demand. That’s slightly more prevalent for quick-service (48 percent) than full-service (41 percent). Among those currently understaffed, roughly 60 percent of operators say their staffing level is more than 10 percent below what they need. Seventy percent indicate they have job openings that are hard to fill, including 73 percent of full-service and sixty-six percent of limited-service restaurants. Approximately two-thirds (67 percent) of operators with difficult-to-fill openings say they’re having trouble finding applicants for kitchen positions. A majority have unfilled job openings for service positions, too. Nearly nine in 10 operators say recruiting and retaining employees is a significant or moderate challenge for their restaurants. Most don’t see things improving in 2024, either. Only 10 percent predict recruiting and retaining will be easier in 2024, while 31 percent expect it to be even tougher and 58 percent anticipate it to be about the same as 2023. #qsroperators #restaurants #qsr #management #staffing #rgm #districtmanagers #franchisees #operators #jobs #franchiseeoperators #employment #careers

Exciting News in the Restaurant Industry It's been confirmed that the owners of D&D London are in advanced talks to acquire the UK operations of TGI Fridays. This potential takeover comes after the parent company of TGI Fridays collapsed into administration last week, leading to uncertainty over the future of its British franchise. Breal Capital and Calveton, who acquired D&D London just last year, are now poised to take on the challenge of revamping the iconic casual dining chain. I find this development particularly intriguing, given the reputation of D&D London for owning some of the capital's most notable restaurants, such as the German Gymnasium and Quaglino's. With their seasoned expertise in hospitality, it seems likely that they could effectively revive TGI Fridays' UK presence. Reports suggest that although some job losses are inevitable, around three-quarters of TGI Fridays' current UK workforce might be retained. This move underscores a broader trend in the hospitality industry where consolidation and strategic acquisitions are becoming commonplace. The challenging economic backdrop has driven companies to rethink their operations and focus on sustainable growth. It remains to be seen how Breal Capital and Calveton will navigate these turbulent waters, but their track record provides a glimmer of hope for TGI Fridays' UK revival. #RestaurantIndustry #TGIFridays #EconomicTrends

VP Editorial Director, Food, Retail, & Hospitality I QSR and FSR magazines I PMQ I CStore Decisions I Club + Resort
Nadeem Bajwa began his career with Papa Johns delivering pizzas during college. He now has more than 200 stores with 500 in sight. Talking to franchisees is one of the best parts of this gig. It's one of the clearest sights into why the restaurant industry is what it is: a path to opportunity built on how hard you want to work and much you want to go grab it. Today, Bajwa is navigating the same challenges all operators are. How do you deliver value without compromising? How can you grow amid inflation? It starts and ends with the franchisee-franchisor relationship.

Licensed Insolvency Practitioner, Senior Manager at BDO LLP. All views are my own and not those of my employer.
One of the big insolvency stories of the last week was the news that Hostmore plc, the owner of restaurant chain TGI Fridays, was placed into administration. The restaurant chain operates across 87 outlets in the Uk employing around 4,500 staff. Administration is primarily a rescue procedure and the restaurants will continue to trade as a buyer is sought for the business and assets. As it stands they have been no closure but the sites are at risk. The administration appointment came following a failed attempt to merge with the its US parent company, a move which would have aimed to create a viable business in the long term. However, this is more the straw that broke the camels back as struggles in the casual dining sector, which have resulted in a number of administrations and restructuring in the past five years, remain and the TGI Fridays brand itself is not the force it once was. The surge in US-styled restaurants in the UK over-saturated the market and as TGI fell behind it fell into one of the biggest issues facing the casual dining sector, the desire to improve margins means costs are cut, often resulting in lower quality ingredients, and prices rise, with consumers concluding that the restaurant is not the value for money it once was especially in a cost of living squeeze. Even with all the steps management had taken, sales fell 12% year on year. Whilst the administration brings the possibility of someone acquiring and rescuing the brand the real challenge will be returning it to relevance in the casual dining sector and as we have seen with other US-inspired chain restaurants like Byron Burger, this is not an easy task. #insolvency #businessrecovery #restructuring #turnaround #business #restaurant #casualdining #accountant #london

Des Gunewardena, formerly one half of restaurant group D&D, has spoken for the first time about his acrimonious 2022 departure from the company he founded 18 years ago. Great scoop from Steve Dinneen on today's front page! Speaking to City A.M. in an exclusive interview he said: “I had no option [but to leave]. There was a pretty fundamental difference of views between the guy who founded the business [him] and the financial stakeholders." “I had one vision for how to develop the company and the private equity investors had a different vision. My strategy was to continue to practise the things that have been so successful since D&D was formed… In the short term, you have to manage the business as well as you can. And in the long term you continue to stick to your vision: long-term players, long-term growth. That was my strategy. Theirs was more focused on the short term.”
