Enhancing well-being in children requires parents to respond to all kinds of situations and challenges in age-appropriate and empathic ways. This builds the foundation for emotional awareness and resilience. This article (and the fab Sesame St video!) are great tools to talk about grief. #Parenting #ChildMentalHealth #wellbeing #Grief
The moving chat between Spiderman actor Andrew Garfield and Sesame Street's Elmo about grief has been all over my social media feed. So it was great to have expert Lauren Breen outline how their conversation provides a great model for communicating about loss The Conversation Australia + NZ Curtin University Sesame Workshop

I want to thank Deidra Garyk for sharing this about my project Lipstick on the Mirror. It's taken me almost 40 years to have the courage to tackle this, because it forces me to confront the most awful experience of my life (losing my Mom to suicide) and the terrifying darkness I faced during some chapters of my life. Losing two of my best friends and mentors, and a cousin a few years ago, hurt like hell; but it wasn't until recently when one of my own kids experienced depression and suicidal ideation that I decided I MUST act. Despite all this, I am incredibly excited about what I am learning through my research, inspired by the people I have met (and who have agreed to be in the documentary), and confident that it will help remove the stigma around mental health and prevent tragic suicides. I want to thank the Centre for Suicide Prevention, Stigma Free Mental Health, Thumbs Up Foundation, Fordham Graduate School of Social Service, TsuuT'ina Nation Health & Wellness Centre, Thompson Rivers University, Foothills Integrative Psychology & Neurotherapy and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences for your willingness to provide expert guidance and support this project. I am asking YOU for your help so I can continue to move this project forward (I continue to research the most cutting-edge science, identify global experts, people who have been mauled by depression or lost a loved one to suicide, write an Outline, finalize a production budget, write grant and funding applications and seek corporate sponsors). Here's how YOU can help: -share this project with your network (like Deidra did below) -make a contribution through GoFundMe (https://lnkd.in/gWhAqEnd) -introduce me to experts or individuals you know who could be included in the documentary -if you're struggling, reach out to me, family or friends, or the organizations I listed above and below -look around your home, circle of friends and colleagues to look for the following WARNING SIGNS: Children and Teenagers: talking, writing or drawing about death, or "wanting to disappear". Behavioural changes include loss of appetite and sleeping more than usual. Adults: a sudden cheerfulness and contentment, sudden preoccupation with death or a desire to give away possessions. Andrew Best has set a goal to destigmatize depression to prevent people from isolating, spiraling, and then committing suicide. He shares his own story in the trailer to a new documentary he is working on. It's a powerful 90 seconds. We know a lot of our friends and colleagues in the patch suffered greatly during the seven-year downturn. Some are still struggling, unsure what to do next. I hope this trailer is a reminder that we live in a community and we have a responsibility to support each other, through good times and bad. AKT believes that conversations about suicide are an essential way of helping to identify mental health and well-being issues and address them early on, before they have a chance to develop further. We have two, free resource films: ‘Courage’, which we made in collaboration with the Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide and which is based in the Security industry and is now a finalist for a Smiley Charity Film Award - view it here… https://lnkd.in/e2BBYq8M, download it here… https://lnkd.in/eSWpxJ8k, and vote for it here https://lnkd.in/e4Xh_yz2 And ‘On the Edge’, which is based in the construction industry (view/download it here… https://lnkd.in/gTTe4Rwp). Both films can be used by any industry as a catalyst to start difficult conversations, so please feel free to download them and use them as part of your mental health & well-being training. Also, as part of AKT’s ongoing commitment to help the construction industry address suicide and its prevention, we have developed a 90 minute live, mental health and well-being programme, ‘A Perfect Storm’, (https://lnkd.in/eQRHgARW) which encourages people to ask difficult but essential questions, and to start the conversations which might make all the difference. If you think this would be useful as part of your suicide prevention training, please contact us at info@aktproductions.co.uk for more information. This is a quick follow-up to yesterday's article about our first television project. I have been providing training for over 15 years and working with First Responders and service providers. I have watched the miracles they create and the sacrifices they make daily for our society, only to face constant backlash and negative media (for the clickbates). It is incredibly disheartening. Our First Responders are in crisis. There are not enough Police and ambulances, and you are put on hold when you call 911. There are several factors, but the number one factor based on Global and International research is that there needs to be more POSITIVE MEDIA narratives that support them and their work or show the REALITY of what they are dealing with daily. THE GOAL OF OUR TELEVISED NATIONAL OSCAR STYLE AWARD CEREMONY is to honour our heroes and tell inspiring, motivational stories of their heroic acts through the lens of the ones they saved: The Survivors. Each winner will be nominated by SURVIVORS and Individuals Impacted by trauma. People can nominate the heroes who saved them or their family members or were there for them during the darkest hours of their lives. Heroes Rising hopes to inspire, motivate and celebrate our unsung heroes and tell inspiring stories of human kindness and resistance. If millions of people can tune in to watch the Film industry getting awarded (for their hard work), we can come together for 2 hours to celebrate our unsung heroes and make them feel loved and appreciated for a change. Who would you nominate? CHECK OUT THE CATEGORIES HERE: www.heroesrising.ca #firstrespondersgala #unsungheores #heroesrising #awardceremony #thankyouforyourservice

Adding another complexity to grieving a loss - no wonder we struggle! It is truly an honour and privilege to speak with the producer and one of the guests sharing their stories on this beautiful documentary on grief. "Meet Me Where I Am" is now available on most streaming channels. Finally, we can journey with them to understand grief more fully. If you'd like a snippet of our discussion - just one of the many nuggets you'll learn from our conversation. Curious for more? (https://lnkd.in/eUxxvJwh) Here's what we talk about: What inspired the creation of the documentary 'Meet Me Where I Am' and its focus on grief? The symbolism of the train metaphor. In what ways does the documentary address the impact of cultural beliefs on the grieving process? The importance of sharing stories and memories of loved ones to honour their lives and find solace in grief. #meetmewhereIam #griefandloss #griefstories

Let’s talk about why sharing videos of tragic events, like the recent helicopter crash, isn’t a good idea. Can you imagine being the victims’ family member, and having to relive the tragedy over and over again? It’s simply cruel. Watching these videos can mess with our emotions and make us care less about the pain of others. It’s important to think before hitting that share button. My heart goes out to the families of the 10 TUDM officers. Let’s be more careful about what we share online. #Babanology #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth #responsiblesharing #accountability
