You’ve probably seen terms like “full-stack marketer” or the “T-shaped marketer.” Today, I’m introducing a new concept: The I-Beam Marketer. The key thing that differentiates great marketers from good ones is data. Effective marketing depends on data-driven personalization, analysis and insights, segmentation, triggered behaviors, and more. The modern marketer simply can't be successful without a strong data foundation. An I-Beam marketer can access, analyze, and act on their data. Whether that’s through skills like SQL, or self-serve tooling like Hightouch, this is the key to their effectiveness. I’ve been lucky to work with many next-generation leaders in marketing who fit the bill here— such as Austin Hay, Jacqueline Freedman 🦋, and Rob McElroy.
