I had a very stimulating day at the online RICS Global Construction and Infrastructure Conference today. I want to share a big thank you to all of those who spoke and all those involved in organising it. It covered a number of the key topics facing our industry, from supply chains, through global construction economics, and digital tools to sustainability and pushing towards net zero carbon. For those of you interested in more detail, some of my key take aways from the day were: - That the industry drive for a more sustainable and lower carbon future can become our selling point for new generations: as a practical way to improve our world (as explained by my fellow Arcadian Steve Armstrong) - The importance of investing in transformation when digitising our businesses: it's not just about purchasing the best software. - The crucial role that risk and financing have in helping us to adapt to climate change, and the importance of supporting discussions on adaptation at feasibility stage. - The imperative to move to low carbon, nature based solutions for providing the climate resilient infrastructure we need - Continuing to improve our ability as an industry to connect data across disciplines and services to support better decision making. - The need to get the right supply chain in place in response to the challenge of skilled labour shortages, as headlined in Arcadis' International Construction Costs report (https://lnkd.in/e9jrAAf8)

As we move into the new year it is natural that we all look ahead, forecast, plan, predict and evolve. The way that we approach the future is deeply rooted in the past - learning from, and building on this experience is crucial. For the past couple of years I have been working on a project for Mott MacDonald that did just that. It brought to life stories of ingenuity and pioneering engineering that quite literally shaped the fabric of society. Both existing staff and people who had long retired, gave up their time to tell me what it was really like to design the kind of infrastructure that had never been delivered before. "The eyes of the world were on us, waiting for something to go wrong, but we did it," said one engineer who was quite rightly proud of his team who designed a structure that became a world icon. Time and perspective enable people to reflect. "It was the best project of my life and it has kept the lights on in the UK for 40 years," said another engineer of an underground pumped storage hydropower power station. He and his colleague’s high quality design meant that it not only outperformed its life expectancy, but beat all financial expectations from the outset. Of course the people that designed London's first deep level tube lines in the late 1890s are no longer here to tell me about it but we investigated their diaries, maps and photographs sharing their stories through artefacts and evidence. Evidence and facts are crucial in a world where a deep understanding of engineering physics leads to infrastructure that meets the needs of humanity in every possible way - from the water we drink, to the energy we use to the tunnels, bridges and railways that connect us. Every project that happens today relies on the experience, and ingenuity of the people who took the first steps to move the baseline of possibility forwards. Engineering companies win work based on their history of delivering such projects and so sometimes looking to the future means looking to the past. As we come to the end of the project I wanted to share a few highlights of the #heritage campaign where you too can hear the voices of the people that created some of the most important infrastructure of the last century..... Thank you to everyone involved in its delivery including: Joanna Prempeh Adrienne Konecsnik Andrew Mylius Helena Clarkson Joshua Elliot Dave R. Grant Springford Lex W. Nancy Madter and of course the brilliant podcast Engineering Matters

Ferrovial’s distinct business model allows us to tackle the most complex projects, supporting the entire lifecycle of a project—from conceptualization to design, funding, construction, and operation of critical infrastructure like highways and airports. This integrated strategy again delivered strong financial results. The Construction division ended the first nine months of the year with a record order book of $17.4 billion, with North America accounting for 49% and Poland 25%. Revenue amounted to $5.7 billion, an increase of 3.2% on a like-for-like basis. The Construction division reported adjusted EBIT of $220 million and an adjusted EBIT margin of 3.9%, on track to meet the 3.5% target for fiscal year 2024. A small step for us, but a giant Leap to Zero for the sustainable construction community! This week, Rijkswaterstaat hosted the second International Conference on Emission Free Construction Sites ‘Leap to Zero’. This network of public infrastructure owners from Europe and abroad convened with OEMs, contractors, international organizations and other stakeholders to discuss the transition towards a zero emission future in the construction sector at an international level. It was a real pleasure to organise an event with so many inspiring people committed to the goal of a net zero construction sector! My key takeaways of the conference are: - Transitions can go surprisingly fast. We have seen the examples, for instance in the city bus industry. - Don’t be disappointed if the final goal is not reached immediately. We are doing this step by step. - Collaboration across the value chain (contractors, manufacturers, infrastructure owners and policy makers) is crucial to set the wheels of change in motion. - Demand in projects is essential to offer the market a reliable, stable growth path. - In many countries, national regulation that brings clarity for the sector is a goal for the long term. To keep stakeholders motivated, short term focus should be on the zero emission ambitions of local or regional authorities. - Standardisation of zero emission equipment will significantly improve the operation of electric machinery. Four global manufacturers agreed to start discussions on common efforts to reach standardisation. I’m also happy to share that a small working group has been set up to work on a governance model for the Leap to Zero-network to ensure future activities and events of the network. International cooperation and information exchange is the key to a successful transition. Great things are ahead of us! We hope to see each other soon next year! I’d like to thank Alexander Neumann, Hans Bekkers, Tobias van Oord, Tobias Stöcker, Dominique CHEVILLARD, Philip Mortensen, Arjan Walinga, Nikki Nicolai, Han Rekers, Gerard van der Veer, Patrick Schothuis, Sachio Kunisawa (and her colleagues from Komatsu), Marieke Donkervoort and Arjen Ros for sharing their inspiring contributions. Special thanks to Anky van Wijchen, Arjen van den Ouden and Gerben van den Berg for organising the conference field trip to Dike Reinforcement Tiel-Waardenburg and Charging Station Watthub. #Leaptozero #sustainability #ZEconstruction

Excited to share the launch of the AECOM Ireland Annual Review 2025! At this moment of economic and construction opportunity within both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the report provides an analysis of the construction industry's performance across key sectors as well as major trends. This year’s theme – programmatic thinking – showcases how this approach is transforming infrastructure delivery across Ireland. A great example is the Cork Area Commuter Rail (CACR) programme, where our work with Iarnród Éireann is embedding sustainability across every phase. I enjoyed collaborating with Emma Love and the wider programme team to develop tailored outputs that provided a practical roadmap to integrate sustainability into decision making.
