Our Motherload project is one of seven teams focusing on policy-oriented solutions, while the other 10 funded projects will scale program-based solutions, all addressing the challenge of unpaid care work by building on successful, locally led solutions. "The University of Cape Town in South Africa is building on a pilot that documented the straining experiences of low-income mothers’ unpaid care work. The term ‘motherload’ refers to the invisible, increasing and mentally draining unpaid care work that is exacerbated by challenging living conditions and the lack of male partners' involvement in child-care and household responsibilities. COMMEMORATING WORLD HEALTH DAY On April 7th, the world unites to celebrate World Health Day, an occasion dedicated to promoting global health awareness and advocating for universal access to healthcare. This year's theme, "My Health. My Right," echoes the fundamental principle that every individual has the right to access quality healthcare without discrimination. As the Jasper Women's Health Foundation, we recognise the significance of this theme and its particular importance for our community. Why World Health Day Matters for Jasper: World Health Day is a poignant reminder of the importance of advocating for health rights, particularly for Jasper's women's health rights. Access to reproductive health services, maternal care, mental health support, and preventive screenings are essential components of women's healthcare, yet these services may be scarce or inaccessible for many women worldwide. By raising awareness about women's health rights, we can empower women to demand equitable access to healthcare services tailored to their needs. Promoting Health Equity in Jasper: The theme "My Health. My Right." resonates deeply with our mission to champion health equity for women in Jasper. Every woman deserves the right to make informed decisions about her health and well-being, free from discrimination and barriers. Through advocacy, education, and community outreach, the Jasper Women's Health Foundation strives to bridge the gap in healthcare access and empower women to take charge of their health. As we commemorate World Health Day, let us recommit ourselves to equity, dignity, and justice principles in healthcare. By advocating for policies prioritising women's health, we are fostering partnerships with local healthcare providers and amplifying women's voices in our community; we may create a more inclusive and responsive healthcare system. In the spirit of #IWD, we’re dedicating the month to highlighting the important work Shoppers Drug Mart Foundation for Women’s Health™ is doing to make care more equitable and accessible for all women in Canada. Did you know: - Women experience depression and anxiety twice as often as men, and are 3x more likely to face barriers to service.        - 1 in 5 menstruators struggle to afford menstrual products       - Only 7% of the national funding goes to women’s health research        - 44% or nearly half of Canadian women have reported experiencing some form of psychological, physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.     The Foundation’s work is critical to our commitment to advancing social equity. The Foundation is investing $50 million by 2026 to improve access to care, increase awareness of women’s unique health needs, and support critical women’s health research and innovation. Last year alone, the Foundation raised $11 million toward this goal, impacting over 400,000 women and 371 partner organizations. Stay tuned this month as we highlight some of their amazing work.   

As we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of liberation and reflection, we're proud to reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity and equity in all aspects of our work at ZERO. A lot has been said about DEI programs, and a backlash has caused some organizations to step back from their initial investments. But here's the thing - if we want to save lives from prostate cancer, we must address that some people are dying at much higher rates. We must address health equity. And if we're going to focus on those most underserved, we have to have staff and volunteers to reflect those communities. And if we want to recruit and retain those talented folks, we have to give them an environment where they feel safe and feel like they can thrive. At ZERO, we believe that diversity is our strength and that every voice deserves to be heard. That's why we're actively working to create an environment of belonging where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to the table. From our recruitment and hiring practices to our training and development programs, we're dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. But our commitment to health equity doesn't stop there. We're also deeply committed to stepping up partnerships both nationally and within the communities we serve. Women sustain communities in ways that are not always recognized for their true value, from doing more of the caregiving for loved ones at home to working in essential professional fields like education and health care that can be underpaid and undervalued. And because many times our contributions are taken for granted, our needs are not always considered or met by existing policies and practices. This is particularly challenging as women live longer than men everywhere in the world (in the United States, about 6 years longer) and many do not have the resources to age with dignity. We see this every day in our work at NCOA with women representing over 70% of the 2.3 million lives improved by our team last year. Thanks to Salzburg Global Seminar for bringing together an impressive group of leaders from around the world to examine and explore how we close the women’s health and wealth gap as we age. It was energizing to learn more about what is working in other countries. And, it was an honor to share NCOA’s insights on ways communities can and are fostering a culture of health, well-being and meaning for women as we age. Local communities and community based organizations are laboratories of innovation. More diverse, but not perfectly so (yet) - looking back at the Youth-pre World Health Summit 2023 🌍 The Youth Side Program Program during the World Health Summit is now in its second year and we profited tremendously from the feedback by our 2022 cohort. As a part of the overarching programy, from October 13th to 14th, we hosted the Youth-pre World Health Summit, our intense two-day advocacy program. In this training, we paired theoretical input by external speakers with practical sessions and co-working time in small working groups to give participants time to plan their advocacy during the World Health Summit and make use of their newly acquired skills. We expanded the breadth of the program since last year, covering diverse aspects of high-impact youth advocacy. - Global Health Governance with Felix Stadelmann from Technische Universität Dresden. - Institutionalizing Youth Participation Iris M. Blom of the WHO Youth Council. - Effective Communication delivered by Christopher Strahle of The Youth Side Program - Digital Transformation with Whitney Gray of the DTH Lab. - An Introduction to Effective Altruism by Sarah Tegeler of EA Germany. - High-Impact Advocacy by Patrick Stadler of Pour Demain. - Advocacy Campaign Planning by Jasmin Behrends of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). - Careers in Global Health by Hans Willmann of the World Health Organization. We appreciate their amazing contributions to this capacity building initiative. Coming to the question of diversity. We managed to gather a much more diverse group of participants compared with last year's, especially in regards to their academic background and region of origin (although we could still do better). But both we as the organizing committee and our speakers lacked diversity, we are white, have an academic background and come from high-income countries. As a new program, our funds are very limited. Perfect regional representation, both of speakers and participants, is contingent on additional funding for travel grants - a significant number of selected participants had to withdraw as they could not afford the flights and accomodation. ❗So here's the call to action: If you are aware of grant makers that would cover travel expenses for participants from LMIC, contact us, we would love to make our program more inclusive❗ #youthsideprogram #youthleadership #youthempowerment #advocacymatters #youthparticipation #whs2023
