Our June Employee spotlight is Yohennes Gehbreaman! With 8 years at PECI, Yohennes has grown from Maintenance Foreman to General Underground Foreman. He's an incredible mentor in our underground division and a true team player who's always ready to help. His commitment to his crews, whom he considers family, is unmatched. We interviewed Yohennes with a lightning round of ten questions about his time with Professional Excavators: - How long have you worked at PE? I have worked at PE for 8 years. - How long have you worked in the industry? 16 years - How did you begin your career in construction? I started as a Laborer working with an underground crew, and worked my way up the ladder. - What accomplishment are you most proud of? I left my home country of Eritrea in 2000 for the dream of a better opportunity and life. It was a hard and long travel to get here and I would say that it was probably one of the proudest accomplishments of my life. Being able to make it all the way to Canada, meet my amazing wife and starting our wonderful family. - What's one thing you wish people knew about your job? I don't think people really know how critical my job can be, if our crew was to hit a feeder main. It could literally flood a neighborhood or downtown Calgary in a matter of minutes. - What do you find most enjoyable about working at PE? The people that I work with have become part of my family. It makes it enjoyable to come to work everyday and be with good people. - What's the most intriguing project you've worked on while working for PE? Just recently I was able to work on the new Calgary Event Center and the City of Calgary inspector had said that in the 30 years he had been doing this line of work, he had not seen an install with that degree of difficulty. The crew worked very hard and was able to pull it off incident free and on time. - What career goal are you currently working on? My goal is to keep the team safe and promote a healthy work environment that my crew enjoy coming to work each day. - If you could trade jobs with anyone in the company for a day, who would it be and why? I would like to be Candace for a day so I could play with all of the company's money!! Haha Just joking, I enjoy what I do and I prefer the position I hold with the company. - Share something unexpected about yourself that your coworkers may not know? Harbour Master interview series no. 08: Embracing challenges & diversity As Assistant Dock Master at Associated British Ports Port of Goole, Alexander Dales certainly has his work cut out. Meet our carpenter apprentice, Ryan!   We asked him some questions about himself that we would like to share. 1.       What initially drew you to your field? I have always liked building things and doing things more hands-on. 2.       Who has been the biggest influence on your career path, and why? The biggest influence on my career path has definitely been my family. They always keep my head up. And they always support me no matter what. 3.       What are your biggest professional goals for the next 5 years? Master carpentry and as well as learn about other trades. I personally think construction will always be used and needed in this world. 4.       What are you most passionate about outside of work? I’m most passionate about enjoying the outdoors such as hunting and fishing. 5.       What’s your go-to way to unwind and recharge after a busy week? I like to unwind by spending time with my family, friends or cousins. 6.       If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? If I could travel anywhere it would be Canada because of the wildlife and the endless water. 7.       What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know? Out of all the favorite outdoor activities I do my favorite is ice fishing. 8.       You win the lottery! What’s the first thing you would do? I would buy flowers for my girlfriend 9.       If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? To have all the knowledge in the world. 10.  What’s your favorite aspect of our company culture? Safety 11.  What are you most grateful for in your role at our company? Learning new things and staying active 12.  What advice would you give to someone new starting at our company? Listen to your supervisors 13.  What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Never give up 17.  What makes you laugh the hardest? Not dad jokes, I laugh the hardest thinking about old memories.

Coaching and development is a vital part of any industry. For example, I spent last weekend mentoring a new starter in my local McEatery, teaching them the McRopes so that one day they can be an extremely impactful member of the McTeam. It's why it's so vital to ensure proper coaching is provided alongside a defined career path, because without it there's little chance of progression, and any progression in your career feels more like luck than design. Luckily I'm working with a couple of drylining contractors in the Midlands who are looking for trainee/assistant Quantity Surveyors to join their team. The view is that in the long run these guys are going to run the commercial departments, so long as they have the minerals - it doesn't get much more defined than that does it?
