“We’re committed to a sustainable, circular economy that creates value for everyone, closing the loop on waste, preserving natural resources and reducing our impact on climate change.”
Tarkett are the first flooring manufacturer to successfully pioneer closed loop, post-use recycling for vinyl, carpet tiles and linoleum floorings. Through the development of breakthrough technology, operating under Tarkett’s ‘ReStart take-back and recycling’ programme, customers are encouraged to actively contribute to the ambition of creating flooring using recycled content from recycled glued post-use homogeneous flooring, which has already collected 109,000 tonnes of post-use flooring globally between 2010 and 2020.
Tarkett’s vinyl flooring can effectively be recycled up to eight times, saving carbon emissions, preventing waste, and has predicted that by 2030 at least 30% of raw materials used will come from recycled materials, resulting in all emissions throughout the value chain being reduced by 30%.
Tarkett have also harnessed a cradle-to-cradle eco-design philosophy in developing ‘EcoBase-Backing,’ helping the process of closing the loop on carpet tiles. Made with healthier recyclable materials, EcoBase can be recycled again and again with no loss of quality, helping to conserve natural resources. EcoBase-backed carpet tiles generate CO2 when recycled, which 62% of Tarkett’s carpet tiles currently have.
Tarkett went on to collaborate with regenerative yarn manufacturer Aquafil, developing a natural range of pigments that has continued to expand in rages of colours available. In 2019, Tarkett and Aquafil closed the loop on carpet tiles completely through their development of technology at the Wallwijk facility, separating yarn and backing whilst managing to retain 95% yarn purity.
With the pursuit of 'always more' pushing limits and threatening our planet, Tarkett's Desso carpet tiles have found a way to deliver more for less. This means less water, lower emissions, greater wellbeing and more proof.
