Life of a Quantity Surveyor: Expectation vs. Reality! Being a QS is not always as relaxed as it seems! From keeping projects on budget to managing contracts, dealing with unexpected costs, and handling endless paperwork, the reality can sometimes be overwhelming. Balancing client expectations with practical limitations requires not only technical knowledge but also patience and adaptability. As I approach my one-year milestone as a Quantity Surveyor, I’ve realised just how much this role is about balancing technical knowledge, practical experience, and communication skills. Here are 3 things I wish I’d known when starting out: 1️⃣ Never underestimate the importance of contracts – Every decision ties back to the contract. Learn it thoroughly, and it will guide you through even the trickiest situations. 2️⃣ Ask questions – As a newer QS, I’ve learnt more from experienced colleagues and project teams than any textbook ever could. 3️⃣ Mistakes are part of the process – The key is learning from them and making sure they don’t happen again! #QuantitySurveying #ConstructionJourney
