November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. Each year, an estimated 4.2 million youth and young adults experience homelessness in the United States. One in 10 adults ages 18 to 25, and one in 30 youth ages 13 to 17 will experience homelessness each year. They are more likely to become victims of trauma. While trying to survive on the streets, youth are exposed to countless dangers, with an increased likelihood of substance abuse, early parenthood, impulsivity, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and a vulnerability to being trafficked. Working to de-stigmatize youth homelessness is critical as is providing resources to break the cycle of homelessness.

In a startling revelation, a recent report highlights that thousands of 16 and 17-year-old children in England were homeless last year. More concerning is the treatment of these young individuals 'like adults', exposing them to challenging and often perilous situations. This issue sheds light on the broader crisis of youth homelessness and the urgent need for tailored support and policies. It's not just about providing a roof; it's about understanding the unique vulnerabilities and requirements of young people who find themselves without a home. As we think about social policies and community support systems, it's crucial to consider the specific needs of different age groups, especially vulnerable teens at a critical juncture in their lives. Community and human relationships were my lifeline out of homelessness. Isolation exacerbates the trauma. Let us foster belonging for all. In my darkest moments of addiction, I sank deeper each time I disconnected from others. Healing began when people showed up for me. This is true for anyone facing homelessness. Humans need communities; isolation exacerbates struggles. Yet unhoused individuals are often shuffled between temporary services, denied dignity and connection. At SecondGrace.LA, we are building an inclusive community where unhoused and housed neighbors support and advocate for one another. When we take time to listen to each other's stories, barriers dissolve. No one rebuilds alone. As I found stable housing, it was comfort, advice and encouragement from fellow supporters that propelled me forward again. Without friendships, I would have lost hope. Please join our compassionate community as we fight the root causes of homelessness. Together, we can advocate for mental healthcare access, addiction treatment, affordable housing and more. No person is an island — we rise together. Together, We Can House Hope: Be a part of the solution. Contribute to our grassroots movement to end homelessness in Los Angeles. Join us! Boston faces a pressing challenge: it has the fourth-highest rate of family homelessness in the US. Childhood homelessness has far-reaching consequences, affecting a child's education and their prospects for adulthood: they have a heightened risk of experiencing homelessness as adults and are more vulnerable to negative health and well-being outcomes. We are working to combat these issues by improving the interconnected support systems for children experiencing homelessness.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures out there! At Turning Point Community Services, we recognize the vital role fathers and father figures play in shaping strong, resilient families. Today, as we celebrate fatherhood, let's raise awareness about the unique challenges many fathers face, including homelessness and housing instability. Did you know that family homelessness is a significant and growing issue in the U.S. with families comprising 30-50% of the homeless population? While many of these families are headed by single mothers, we understand that many take on the roles and responsibilities of both parents. Together, we can ensure every parent has the opportunity to create a brighter future for their children. #FathersDay #SupportFamilies #EndHomelessness #TurningPointCommunityServices #FamilyStrength #TPCS [Sources: National Alliance to End Homelessness, Family Gateway]
