St. Josemaría Escrivá wrote that work is the fulcrum upon which human activity takes on divine meaning, and he highlights three aspects that operate in an organic way to mutually influence one another. The first is the sanctification of work, which is the most basic aspect and the root of the other two. The second is sanctifying oneself in work, which is a result of the first. Ford has done a phenomenal job bringing the old Michigan Central Station back to life with a massive capital investment in the community. Detroit’s turnaround still has a long road ahead but the investment in the heart of the city by key corporations (and key families) have supported this turn in what continues to be a positive direction. We can’t forget another key part of this turnaround has been driven by individual investors, a lesson in economics - one I fear will be missed through the reemergence of Detroit as a player once again in this country. Long before a few large corporations started pumping money into the greater infrastructure, a resurgence was happening on a smaller, but perhaps, more impactful scale. Young entrepreneurs, artists, and investors were changing the landscape of the city for years ahead of the curve. These individuals were buying houses and rehabbing them one brick at a time. Many young and ubertalented chefs bought old buildings and started restaurants. People started visiting the city once again to see cutting edge art in less then perfect gallery spaces established by artist collectives where studio space were obtainable/affordale. They came to eat in restaurants so good Detroit would eventually start buzzing in The New York Times. This happened because people had a fighting chance at success with affordable housing and rent prices. A beautiful transformation has happened in small pockets all over the city and as the turnaround continues history would foreshadow those who invested early or were here all along, will be pushed out as pricing continues to climb. Detroit is a small window on what we’ve all but lost in so many other parts of the state and country: “The American Dream.” Both scenarios need to happen for Detroit to be successful. We need Ford Motor Comapny, The Gilbert Family and all the other investors with deep pockets. We also need places in this country where our kids can create meaningful lives for themselves. Where individuals can start their own version of the American Dream because doing so is affordable. As a society we need to place value of the opportunities afforded by places like Detroit so we don’t homogenize every corner of America and call that success. We need to support the sums of individuals who never left Detroit and neighborhoods still on the brink of survival. It’s a puzzle that I hope continues to take shape and it’s imperative not walk away from the racial disparity that continues to exist in Detroit. We can recognize both things: there is beauty that eventually arose from the ashes and we must not walk away from the responsibility of our history. I don’t know what the answer is to all of the looming questions surrounding the direction of the city but I do know those fortunate enough to live in this beautiful area are all responsible for continuing to take part in the direction of rebuilding process.

I was a participant of this program in 2019 (then, it was called the Silicon Valley Innovation Academy). And during this program, I decided to shut down my last startup, that I had been working on for more than a year. Multiple startup events, competitions (several of which we won), and accelerator programs couldn't teach me what I learnt here in 10 weeks. Things like, what really matters in a founding team, frameworks of innovation thinking and exposure to what is already possible in the world. On top of it, I have also gained some great friends, across different cultures, through this program. Here's a quick report from our founder about the most recent end of course graduation at HMP Wandsworth.

“You can tek us out of Bradford, but you can’t tek the Bradford out of us.” As I start my Place Branding studies in what goes for my spare time over the next 2 years, I can’t resist applying my learning to the place where my own identity is rooted -albeit shallowly. Bradford also has a busy two years ahead as it prepares to be in the spotlight as Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture. In searching around for what the City of Culture status can offer its residents and perhaps help solidify “brand Bradford”, I came across this celebratory video narrated in her own words by local poet and educator Kirsty Taylor. I find the vídeo refreshing for capturing something of a warts and all perspective that rings true for what I know of the city’s self-identity and external image. It makes a bold, early contribution as part of the official build-up to 2025. The video’s premise that we carry our hometown identity with us, is true for many cities. We can also in part be personally pre-judged by a place’s popularised image. In the build-up to 2025, I’ll be watching for how this fleeting 12 months can contribute to creating a unifying brand for the city that captures its authentic identity and perhaps updates its external image in a lasting way. As the Bradford Council’s imaginative Cultural Strategy expresses it, “Part of what we’re doing with Bradford 2025 is to make sure when we ‘speak Bradford’ to the wider world, it feels like the Bradford people actually live in”. #bradford #westyorkshire #citycentre #cities #placebranding #placemaking #culture #heritage #cityofculture

I recently attended a seminar with the Institute of Place Management in conjunction with British and Australian Placemakers. What do Placemakers in the UK and Australia have in common? Well, it turns out a lot! It really struck me how we share many of the same challenges despite being on different sides of the world. It’s so important that we have these conversations not just within our own communities, but far and wide too. More conversation invites better ideas and solutions. And the more we talk about these challenges, the more change we’ll see.
