Big problems grow from little errors that do not get fixed. Creative subjects are being removed from schools or watered down to enable a focus on core subjects (maths, English, science). That isn't necessarily a problem I hear you say, but think of it another way: everybody is different. We all need schools and education to engage a wide range of children to ensure they see a way forward and a path to an engaged future after school. For some, that direction comes in maths, for some it's art. for those that cross boundaries, it's design and technology. The slow eradication of creative and technology subjects is well reported, and the long lasting effects on UK innovation, design, development and productivity will be the long lasting problems we will struggle to fix. I'm happy to support anyone who puts creative and hands on subjects inline with the usual core subjects because without one, the other doesn't benefit in the long run. Example, if it wasn't for the artist, who understood physics, we wouldn't have helicopters. The same guy painted some nice pictures. A benefit to a wider audience. #education #design #technology
I am delighted to share this article from today's Observer. It accurately captures our fight against time to save design and technology education. This is a big week for the subject, as we have several significant events planned for later in the week that I will keep you posted on. We owe it to future generations of young people to keep this subject in the curriculum and, in fact, to grow and transition the subject into one that helps create the problem-solvers, innovators, and creatives who will help shape our future. Please do take a couple of minutes to read the article, and if you want to join the growing number of designers, engineers, manufacturers and creatives putting the individual and corporate names behind the subject and The Design & Technology Association's work to save it, please do reach out and let's talk. https://lnkd.in/eqSYnEpz #engineering #design #manufacturing #innovation #creativity #making #textiledesign #becausedesignmatters #teaching

Academics rule OK? For the last 14 years we have been driven towards a content-driven, skills-free curriculum, started by Michael Gove and sustained by Nick Gibb. Key stage 3 and 4 offer little for those who want to do practical subjects. Schools with declining budgets have to opt for the subjects that don't cost much, which is not true of technical subjects. Teenagers not that interested in the Ebac subjects vote with their feet and those that make it to the sixth form are offered T-levels as NVQs are squeezed out. As teaching jobs in technical subjects disappear, ITT courses cannot fill places. A depressing downward spiral. I hope the new government will review the curriculum - and start with the lived experience of students who are not in the group who aspire to university. I've been told that, on a recent visit to a Year Six class history lesson, Nick Gibb asked a pupil to tell him the names of all the kings and queens of England. When the pupil got to King Charles, he was told "Now do it backwards". After a long pause, the flustered pupil offered: "driht selrahc?" #engineering #design #manufacturing #innovation #creativity #making #textiledesign #becausedesignmatters #teaching

Have you thought about where engineers come from?! They come from schools and they come from being educated and excited by design and engineering in school. The education system is on its knees and DT is paying the price. I for one should know, having been head of DT and food and nutrition teacher at my last school. There’s so much work to be done, so this important school subject can be saved. If not, the future of engineering will be severely impacted. Give this article a read and see whether you can help. #atkinsrealis #dt #teaching #engineering #becausedesignmatters

New paper alert! 🚀 Our journal article, titled "Programming Design Environments to Foster Human-Machine Experiences", has just been published in Architecture and Design for Industry 4.0 by Springer Nature Group. Co-authored by Giovanni Betti , Saqib Aziz & Christoph Gengnagel, the article presents our research conducted at HENN and at the Universität der Künste Berlin on the potential of #robotic #construction 🦾🏗️methods to boost productivity and reduce the construction industry's carbon footprint through integrated CAD/CAM processes. In it, we explore the challenges and potentials of human-machine collaboration, particularly using #MixedReality (#MR) interfaces, to improve construction efficiency. 👷♀️🤖 Check out the full paper on the following links: #Springer https://lnkd.in/eN4TRnbP #ResearchGate https://lnkd.in/ePe8p4ue #architecture #industry4.0 #computationaldesign #roboticfabrication #digitalfabrication #publication #3dcp #3dconcreteprinting #mr #mixedreality #advancedconstruction #roboticconstruction

What is it that designers bring to the table when designing in the public sector? I'm looking forward to present the paper that I wrote together with Nynke Tromp next week at the DRS2024 Boston conference! In this paper we try to articulate what it is that designers bring when working on complex issues in the public sector. Design labels such as social design and policy design, qualities such as user-centered or empathic, or process models such as the double diamond do not really capture well what designers actually do when working on complex issues and thus the value they can bring. Hence we focused our attention on four distinctive core competencies: integrating, reframing, formgiving and orchestrating. Through several examples we show how these competencies feature in the design process, and how they can be used to identify various different design approaches to complex issues. Interested in more?
