The Vision Statement for the Sacramento 2040 project, adopted by City Council in 2019, states, “In 2040, the City of Sacramento will be a national model of sustainable, equitable growth and community development.” I believe this plan truly lives up to its vision for the city. As California’s first Prohousing designated city, Sacramento is a statewide leader in housing and breaking barriers in building more equitable communities, which historically have been restricted by land use policies set many years ago. One of those policies, representing missing middle housing, is replacing all single-family home only zoning areas with a much more flexible citywide code. This will allow smaller, more attainable units — such as triplexes, fourplexes and cottage courts in every neighborhood. Sacramento will be the first city in California to do so.

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) offer many advantages for community development and housing stability. By separating land ownership from property ownership, CLTs help ensure long-term affordability. This makes housing accessible for low and moderate-income families. Also, this model supports community control and engagement. Residents have a direct say in land use and development decisions, which enhances the responsiveness of housing solutions to community needs. CLTs also contribute to the preservation of open spaces and environmental sustainability. The land is protected from speculative development. Additionally, they help stabilize neighborhoods. CLTs reduce the impact of market volatility and gentrification. This fosters economic resilience and strengthens local communities. This approach not only benefits current residents but also creates a lasting legacy of affordable housing and community stewardship. Update on our work with Bristol Council's Community Resilience Fund🏡... We’re currently conducting access audits for Barton Hill RFC and Full Circle Youth Project. Although these are two very different spaces, the principles of accessibility are universal, and we found many parallels between them. A key focus was improving accessible toilet facilities at both locations. Barton Hill RFC even has the potential to install a Changing Places toilet, which would be a fantastic community asset, greatly enhancing accessibility. We also explored how colour could be used in both locations to break up spaces, making them more identifiable for those with partial visual impairments. This not only aids navigation but also creates a calming environment, making the spaces more accessible to individuals and families with neurodivergent members. These audits remind us that accessibility is about more than just physically entering a space.
